Before the ball drops tonight, I wanted to wrap up 2009 with what I am deeming my "2009 best of" list.   If I could say one thing about the type of posts I did about our alumni in 2009, I would say that self-expression was very prominent this year via the spoken word, the written word and viral video.

On that note, enjoy my top 21 posts (I just couldn't get it down to 20!):

Woo hoo!  This is DT's 1,000th post!

In honor of this post, I thought I'd post a special treat to all my alumni readers across the world who haven't been back to campus in quite some time.

UPenn TourAfter not being back on campus for 5 years, this past September I returned to Penn and discovered its many changes.  In the video above, I take a brief trip down memory lane to many of the locations you, my readers, requested of me on Facebook.

As a bonus, you'll see that I've integrated photos and stories from what campus was like in the 90's.

Enjoy my tour through campus which covers:
  • our namesake, the Dueling Tampons
  • Vagelos Laboratories (the old Chemistry building)
  • Furness Building (I reference THIS incident in the video)
  • the new Annenerg Public Policy Building (I reference THIS photo album in the video)
  • Sansom Street
  • the changed Food Court
  • Locust Walk
  • Ben on the Bench (remember THESE contest entries?)
  • Huntsman Hall (where the old bookstore was)
  • 38th Street Bridge
  • Superblock
  • 40th and Walnut
  • the former AEPi house location (THIS was the reason it was knocked down) (you've got to see this!)
  • (Because my time on campus was limited, I couldn't get everything.  So next time, I promise to get the new Bookstore, the Quad and Houston Hall!)
From post #1 to the coming months of stories I already have banked, a sincere thank you to all the current (and soon-to-be) Penn alumni for sharing your memories, enthusiasm and stories of success with me and all your fellow Quakers.  From this site, many memories have been relived, new connections made and job interviews (and jobs!) attained!  But don't listen to me, read these testimonials below....

DT Testimonials...+/-

"Just wanted to send a note to say thanks for your continued work w/ Dueling Tampons. it's one of the various e-news blasts I read most days. I really liked the one about '3 generations at Penn'."

-Jody Girgenti (C'98)

"As an outsider to the entertainment industry and to LA, DuelingTampons.com gave me an excellent jumping-off point to start my job search. It enabled me to learn about Penn alums in the entertainment industry and conduct necessary preliminary research. From there I was able to reach out to our incredible alumni network, schedule introductory meetings and phone calls, eventually land an interview, and finally secure an internship at a top Hollywood studio."

-Steve Gottlieb (C'04)

"I love what you are doing for Penn with this website. Keep it up!"

-Adam El Sehamy (C'09)

"Thanks for doing your part to unify Penn through Dueling Tampons--it's already been a great resource, and I'm only an incoming freshman. I am truly looking forward to my next four years at Penn and beyond. Thanks again."

-Haywood L. Perry III (C'12)

"Just want to thank you for all you are doing re: DT. You've reenergized my feelings toward Penn and now I have a son who will be applying to Penn"

-Joan L. (W'80)

"Great site. I've really enjoyed everything I've come across since I first came across it. Keep up the good work."

-A.J. Cabrera (C'04)

"Great site —when I first came across it, it took me by surprise. I hadn't used the phrase DT in years, you totally made me laugh. Thanks for that."

-Jason Seiden (W'95)

"I got all misty-eyed looking at the Dueling Tampons site. I mean it gave me sense memory of Penn... of the Walk when it was cold, or being in McNeill with Abiel, or being in German class, or taking 20 extra minutes to get to class because of seeing everyone I knew on Locust Walk, or people that sat in my classes that are now really famous or important... just a great site"

-Chris Hartwell (C'95)

"Love you website..! Very fun to read - I cannot believe what alums (that are WAY younger than us) are accomplishing...very cool...!"

-Dorie Clayman (C'96)

"I'm really digging your website. It's nice to have someone keeping track of all us Quaker over-achievers."

-Jeff Levin (C'07)

"Thank you for your website. I've not been in touch with Penn for YEARS, am speaking at the Bookstore and they wrote to me about Dueling Tampons. I've spent the afternoon going around inside it. so thank you!"

-Michael Rosen

"Hey, I'll be entering Penn in the Fall as a '12 student. Just trying to get a feel for the campus before I come and Dueling Tampons seems like it has got a big place on campus."

-Eric Jacob Maltiel (SEAS'12)

"I love the way you are reaching out to Penn alums and this site...keep up the good work"

-Jennifer Merves Robbins (C'92)

-Ryan Townsend (C'08)

"I really like all the Penn stuff, makes me feel at home... I had a good laugh at the name of the website, it only took me a split second to get it!"

-Dan Gutin (C'97)

"Dueling Tampons is an awesome resource. Thanks for representing LA (my hometown!) and the entertainment industry!"

-Joey Volpe (C'09)

"your dueling tampons site rocks"

-Jordan Rockwell (C'00)

"Big fan of the website! I find it a must read!!"

-Troy Majnerick, Penn New Student Orientation Coordinator

"I just want to thank you. I am a cinema studies major at Penn and your site is an amazing creative and networking resource for me. I love it."

"It's great to see you bringing together the community of Penn alums who took a possibly more interesting route and are doing some really cool things."

-Tara Todras-Whitehill (C'00, Eng'00)

"This is the kind of value-added, life-giving nectar that Matt spoons out so regularly, and for which I am forever...FOREVER...indebted to him."

-Adam Hellegers (C'96)

"The Dueling Tampons site is really impressive. I think Penn should just hand the alumni network over to you :)"

-Eric Barker (C'94)

Jay Matsueda and UPennSongwriter Jay Matsueda (W'95, Good Cop Bad Cop Acoustic Music Group) has recently released his debut solo CD called "Eat Your Sad" and you should definitely give it a listen.

I've known Jay for quite some time now here in Los Angeles and I've been a big fan of his music. As you'll hear on all of his tracks HERE, there is definitely a unique quality to his voice.  My personal favorite of his is the track, "Nothing Inside of Me".

Jay's journey is an interesting one and other Penn alumni in the entertainment industry has responded to his music.  Find out how after the jump!

Price is Right and UPenn
For my "Games and Movies" series I've got a GREAT video (edited by DT favorite Matt Johnson (C'99, Mask and Wig)) based on the ultimate game(show), "The Price is Right".

Specifically, based on the show's announcer.

In this video, "Price Is Right" announcer Rich Fields trains hard with coach Lou Ferrigno, aka "The Hulk", to become the greatest announcer of all time. As a result, he can't turn it off, and drives his wife crazy!

...Speaking of gameshows, remember my post on THIS Penn alum on "Jeopardy"?

30 RockElizabeth Banks (C'96) is sure making her way around to all the popular TV shows this season.

Just a few weeks ago Liz appeared on ABC's "Modern Family" and now she's about to grace "30 Rock" with her presence in at least four episodes.

According to EW.com, she will be playing Jack Donaghy's (Alec Baldwin's) love interest. Her sense of humor can definitely fit well into that show!

Looks like Liz is on the road to getting her own series one day...

UPenn and The Mask and Wig Club

Being the proud Mask and Wig alum that I am, it is no secret that I love promoting anything having to do with this group which is so rich with history (dating back to 1889!).

On that note, last summer I showed you a great clip of the Mask and Wig Club being referenced in a 1937 Warner Brothers film.  And now, as part of my "Blast from the Past" series, I have another classic Mask and Wig clip!

UPenn and The Mask and Wig Club

The club has been doing their signature "kickline" forever and for years, even when I was in college, I had heard they were once on "The Ed Sullivan Show".

Well now I have video proof!

Lesley introduces her Fresh faces line up and does some stand-up about her
love for Barry Manilow, followed by the very strange booty texts she has received.

Lesley WolffI've done great posts on this very funny and well connected Los Angeles stand-up/casting director before.

And now Lesley Wolff's (C'93, Bloomers) popular Los Angeles workshop starts up next week and you can be a part of it! If you've ever wanted to do stand-up, but were afraid, Lesley is the person to train under! I've been to several of her shows and she really knows how to bring the funny out of novice stand-ups.

Per Lesley,
"The Fresh Faces workshop is a 5 week workshop taking you from never doing stand up to a 5 minute set at The Hollywood Improv. The class is all about finding your individual point of view and getting personal . If you have a life you're a comedian. It's a fun energized class that takes the mystique out of the daunting process of creating a set and leaves you with a slight addiction to getting up on stage. If you think you want to try stand up but never knew where to begin this is the class for you. Go to www.myspace.com/ffcomedy and check out some of the past graduates. Workshops are ongoing. To sign up for the next workshop email Lesley Wolff at Lesleywolff@gmail.com. Remember...'If anyone else can do your set...it's not your set'."

Next Fresh Faces Workshop will be Tuesday nights (12/8, 12/15, 12/22, 12/29 with a showcase 1/5 at the Hollywood Improv)

Then in Jan: Weds 1/6 1/13 1/20, 1/27 (7:30pm - 9:30pm) with a showcase Feb 3rd at 7:30pm

Space is limited.

UPenn alumni

More from my "Blast from the Past" series!

Back in September, I introduced all of you to Joan Myerson Shrager (College for Women, School of Education '60).

UPenn Joan Myerson ShragerJoan emailed me to let me know that her family is now 3 generations at Penn (Joan; her parents Ruth Leone Meyers Myerson (College for Women '30) and  Adolph Myerson (Wharton '29); and Joan's son Steven Gold (C'85)  ...and shared with me exclusive photos and stories passed down to her of what Penn was like when her parents went.

Back in September we learned what good grades from Wharton earned Joan's father in 1928.

Today, Joan fills us in on:
  • what social activity we now take for granted that guys had to sign up for(!) back in the late 1920s.
  • Plus learn which very famous Wharton alum (I didn't know about) who Joan's mother passed on!

UPenn History To kick off our "Blast from the Past" series, check out the UPenn School of Nursing 1978 graduation montage video above.

The great thing about this video is that you get glimpses of a very familiar campus (Irvine Auditorium, 34th street, Spruce Street) with subtle differences you would expect from a 1978 video.  (Note the passing cars, hairstyles and clothing!)

Overall, same place but different faces from generations past.  I love this stuff!

Los Angeles ActorLast month, we started our "An Actor's Path" vlog series with Penn alum Alex Weber (C'09, Lacrosse).

One month in and he's already playing around with changing his name.

In his first vlog he talked about how acting classes and networking are key to pursuing an acting career in LA.

This month, he talks about:
  • what new medium he's acting in now
  • his ongoing classes
  • what he's doing for money
  • new workshops he's taking
  • his decision to get new headshots and why he's changing his name (not a strange thing...afterall, she changed her last name from "Mitchell" because of THIS actress)
  • which LA networks are important to be a part of

Alex/Bryant's addendum to this vlog HERE +/-
Which casting director workshops/classes have you been attending?
A casting director by the name of Jeffery Passero is the director of my play and it has been beneficial building a relationship with him. He has cast for several films, and plans to continue in the future. Sports Studios is a production company geared at athletics in films. Being an actor and former Division 1 athlete, this type of production is a great fit for me. I have been consistently in an on-camera class geared towards audition technique. It has been invaluable in terms of learning appropriate strategy to succeed on auditions.

Why did you get new headshots?
Having new headshots done was necessary due to the caliber of the competition's. It was originally suggested by an agent as well as my acting teacher. I agreed in that I wanted a photo that more accurately represented what I look like in person. (his old headshot HERE)

Why did you change your name?
The name change is a work in progress. It will either be Alex Bryant Weber or Bryant Weber.  The motivation stems from the fact that most young actors tend to have unique names.

UPenn Austin musiciansBack in August, we started a new exclusive DT monthly Vlog series documenting the life of 2 Penn graduates who are embarking on a music career, so that others can learn from their experiences.

This month, in their 4th episode, Ben Naecker (C'09, Water Polo) and Blake West (W'09, Jazz Combos) talk about:
  • each of their personal and band updates
  • how they're close to completing their band
  • what their ACTUAL finances have been versus what they projected 2 months ago
Plus, this month, from an Austin rooftop, they feature a fellow musician to give the lesson of the month: "It's all about the music".  Listen to what musician Mike Maven says about having a social life in Austin.  ...I guess you need to be real dedicated!

Watch Episode 4: "It's All About the Music"!

Another Penn "winning woman" on TV's "Modern Family" this Wednesday (11/18) night!

In the episode Elizabeth Banks (C'96) guest stars as a longtime friend of new parents Cam and Mitchell.

Based on the clip above, it looks like she's going to be pretty funny!

Kristin Fairweather NetflixTo kick off our Winning Women Week, Round 2 series, I've got a good follow-up story....

While she didn't win $350,000 for her film in THIS contest (although came very close), Kristin Fairweather (Penn Grad '01, Masters in Government Administration, Alumni Relations) is still a winner...

UPenn Winning WomenAbout a month ago, I launched a "Winning (Penn) Women" series to which many of my DT readers responded postively.   Since then, I've been collecting stories to now launch a Round 2 for this ongoing series.

Look out this week for some entertaining posts including:

  • a filmmaker whose wish was granted
  • an actress to look out for on TV this week
  • some informative "Hollywood insider"videos
  • plus some more fun surprises!
Be kept in the loop and sign up for the newsletter or follow me on Twitter!

(In the meantime, check out my other DT series by looking down the left-hand column of this site)

As far as I know, there are currently 2 sets of Penn alumni who have entered their commercials into the Doritos "Crash the Superbowl" Competition.

If their commercials make it to the top 6 (to be selected by Doritos), America will then vote to determine the top 3 finalist entries that will appear during Superbowl XLIV.   The winner (the ad which ranks #1 on the USA admeter) takes home 1 million dollars!  (check out another alum whose commercial was on during the 2008 Superbowl HERE)

Check out the commercials after the jump...

    UPenn Homecoming
Right before Hollywood came to Penn for Homecoming this past weekend, the Penn Band got their pregame show on at the the Penn-Princeton Homecoming Game.

In this go around in our long rivalry with Princeton, Penn was victorious! (Penn 42, Princeton 7).

Some good parts in the video:
    2:20 - a Penn favorite
6:10 - the youngest Penn band member I've seen to date! ;)

I watch this video and am brought back to those oh so cold football games, with jangling keys and seas of toast:

    Grant Ginder
While living in Washington DC as a speech writer, Grant Ginder (C’05, 34th Street, Beta Theta Pi) began to notice how the politics of the town began taking its toll on all the people around him.

From his experiences, a juicy novel came to fruition...and this weekend, Grant is coming back to Penn this weekend to talk all about it...
