Harold and KumarToday writer Jon Hurwitz's (W'00) film Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay comes out in theaters. This of course is the follow-up movie to Jon's first film Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle.

Per Yahoo Movies, here's the plot:
"The same morning that Harold and Kumar eat at White Castle, Harold learns that Maria, the girl he lusts after, has set off for Amsterdam. The pair decide to pursue her so Harold can proclaim his love. However, an overzealous airline passenger mistakes Kumar for a terrorist, and the plane is diverted as the duo get stuck in a case of mistaken identity."

Jon Hurwitz
Jon (in photo to right) tells me "people should stay through all of the credits, because there is a little something extra at the very end -- Ferris Bueller style".

UPenn videosWatch this funny trailer & find out about the new "going bottomless" trend : )

Read the film's NY Times review and find out why Jon's film is referred to as "good-humored exasperation that never reaches the boiling point of political indignation"

Because Jon is a writer, I asked for a page from his script and he gave me one!

Set up: Harold & Kumar are thrown into Guantanamo Bay after being mistaken as terrorists for sneaking a bong onboard a flight to Amsterdam. Their parents are called into questioning by Ron Fox, the racist Executive Secretary from Homeland Security.

*Please note that views of the script are not the views of DT and are the property of Jon and New Line Cinema.

Roy BankOver the past few days, we've been talking about Roy Bank (C'94), reality head honcho over at Mark Burnett Productions and now President of Merv Griffin Television.

I have mentioned that Roy oversaw such Mark Burnett shows as Apprentice, Survivor, RockStar and Contender...

Before Roy left, he not only created and executive produced Are You Smarter that a 5th Grader?, but he also produced another clever reality show that's sure to be a hit that comes out this summer on CBS.

More on the show here!

Read Part 1: "He's Way Smarter Than a Fifth Grader"
Read Part 2: "He's Now Running This TV Empire"
Read Part 3: "His Hollywood Beginnings and His Biggest Piece of Advice"

Roy's next show, Jingles, will have contestants concocting commercial jingles for real products.

Per RealityTVWorld.com:

"Each one-hour episode of the tentatively-titled series will follow a team of contestants who are given weekly advertisement-writing assignments before having to perform the catchy campaign they created. The products they're pitching could include anything from food or toys to a sports' team fight song or TV show theme. In addition to having to impress a panel of yet-to-be-announced judges and the studio audience, the contestants will also have to wow home viewers -- who will vote for their favorite following each broadcast to determine a weekly winner."
Clever and potentially cringe-worthy music WITH product placement?! I'll be watching for sure!

Roy's got some other shows coming soon but too early to talk about. But from what I've heard, these too are going to be some great programs!

UPenn Felisha Liu (W'09) is part of a semester long Penn in Cannes program which will have her and other Penn undergrads attending the festival from May 14 - 25.

There she will be acting as special Dueling Tampons Correspondent and giving us the exclusive early scoop about some of the great (and not so great) films to come out of the festival.

As she preps for her trip to Cannes, she sent me the following post to share with my DT readers which includes:
  • her experience with the program thus far
  • some of the risqué films she's already seen
  • what tactics she will consider in order to get into the most screenings while at Cannes
Read her post...+/-

"Professor Gentili dismisses the class. I look to the left. I look to the right. The next time I will see these people will be in Cannes, amidst thousands of the most famous people in the world (read: Brad Pitt). Nothing separates me and my
Penn-In-Cannes experience! Oh, except for those 3 pesky finals and 4 group presentations.

As a part of the program, I attended several screenings from the Philadelphia Film Festival.

Usually a fan of Hugh Grant romantic comedies, I was thrust into the world of international independent work too risqué for the main screen. "The Sperm" fulfilled its shocking title. Picture a college student with an overdue erection jacking off into a sewer and his sperm turning into sexually frustrated mutant babies. That got your attention? Watch on to find out about the arrival of a father-daughter alien team who find the cure to deflating the babies: a beam of concentrated sperm produced through love. I can’t imagine seeing this film without the guise of being a film critic, but as a member of the film community, everything seems all right.

Students from past years visited the last class lecture to give practical advice about getting into the most screenings while in Cannes.

  • For instance, you should build a faux website and make false business cards to get accreditation for the coveted VIP red badges.

  • Girls: if you are slightly less inspired, just wear a pretty dress and smile wide. Some things work no matter what country you are in.

The next three weeks will consist of finishing out the school year, writing the 5-8 page non-graded pre-departure paper, and shopping shopping shopping! I have got to get myself some pretty dresses- all in the name of pursuing higher education, of course. Stay tuned and I’ll see you in Cannes!

    XOXO—FL"

    UPenn
Mrs. LieutenantIn late January, I reported that Phyllis Zimbler Miller’s (WG’80) novel Mrs. Lieutenant: A Sharon Gold Novel had been nominated as a semi-finalist for the first Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award competition.

Phyllis’ story is a personal one based on her own experiences in 1970 as one of 4 women who came together when their husbands went on active duty as officers in the U.S. Army.

In developing this story, Phyllis used all the original army documents from that time as reference while she was writing ...and now you can see some of these original army documents among other items on her book's website.

Visit Phyllis’s website and check out:

    • The first four chapters of the novel – one from the point of view of each of the four women protagonists: a Northern Jew, a Southern Baptist, a Puerto Rican, and a black from the South
    • The “Support Military Families” section – Per Phyllis, “When my husband and I were later stationed in Munich , Germany , I learned from personal experience how important were such things as the Passover food items supplied to us by the Jewish Welfare Board. Thus, without taking a position on the current fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan , I wanted my website to encourage people to support the needs of military personnel and their families. The website’s “Support Military Families” section describes some of the many current support organizations, all of which are in need of financial donations. These organizations range from Soldiers’ Angels – with the mission statement “may no soldier go unloved” – to Jews in Green – addressing the special needs of Jewish military personnel. And there are links to each organization’s website so that visitors to www.mrslieutenant.com can easily support U.S. deployed military personnel and/or their families back home.

    Allison Winn Scotch
Allison Winn ScotchAllison Winn Scotch's (C'95, Theta, DP Columnist) widely praised novel, The Department of Lost and Found comes out in paperback today.

The book follows the journey of a successful career woman who in coping with lost love and illness finds herself examining what went wrong in her life by tracking down five former loves. Per Allison, the main character learns "that sometimes when life is at its most unexpected, it’s not what you lose that makes you who you are . . . it’s what you find."

    A more detailed synopsis here...+/-

"It didn’t start out as the worst day of Natalie Miller’s life. At thirty, she is moving up the political ladder, driven by raw ambition and ruthless determination. As the top aide to New York’s powerful female senator, she works hard, stays late, and enjoys every bit of it, even if the bills she’s pushing through do little to improve the lives of the senator’s constituents. And if her boyfriend isn’t the sexiest guy alive, at least he’s a warm body to come home to.

Then he announces he’s leaving. But that news is barely a blip compared to what Natalie’s doctor tells her: She has breast cancer. And she can’t cure it by merely being headstrong. Now the life Natalie must change is her own.

All her energy, what little of it she has left, must go into saving herself from a merciless disease. So when she’s not lying on the sofa recovering from her treatments and indulging in a curious addiction to The Price Is Right, she realizes it’s time to take a hard look at her choices. She begins by tracking down the five loves-of-her-life to assess what went wrong. Along the way, she questions her relationships with her friends, her parents, her colleagues, the one who got away, and, most important, with herself: Why is she so busy moving through life that she never stops to embrace it?

As Natalie sleuths out the answers to these questions, her journey of self-discovery takes her down new paths and to unexplored places. And she learns that sometimes when life is at its most unexpected, it’s not what you lose that makes you who you are . . . it’s what you find.

Hey Hollywood alumni, sounds like a movie to me. Get in touch with Allison at her website here!
