It's not often I pick up my personal pen about Penn. After the most surprising first year as editor/creator of DuelingTampons.com, I must thank you before hopping a flight to London to celebrate not just my birthday and the new year.. but the biggest gift of the year - DT turning 1 year old. As I sip a glass of champagne at 35,000 feet, I will be toasting you.

DuelingTampons' popularity caught the attention of the DP. Both Alumni Weekend and Homecoming Weekend came alive as DT had cameras rolling and brought you exclusive video coverage.

You might think Wharton's Donald Trump (W'68) got all of this year's glory as I tracked the who's who of Penn. Turns out alum Elizabeth Banks (C'96) ranks at the top of the DT's most famous Penn clicks. That came as a little surprise to the Hollywood actress/Penn superstar when I sat down to dinner answering questions about DT to friends.

Famous and infamous words flew out of the mouths of undergrads like Jessica Gold Haralson (C'08) when Playboy picked her out of the Penn crowd having come across her controversial smart-sex magazine. Jessica was quoted in Playboy's September issue talking all about how in her own words "porn is awesome".

DuelingTampons has become a habitual networking source for all things Penn. Over the course of this year, DT posted 400+ stories unique to the Penn community, 600+ videos, 300+ photos, and 400+ message board posts. The number of undergrads and alumni checking out the site on a daily basis has grown into the thousands from what originally started as a hobby and now has become a love of mine. I'm committed to DT's momentum continuing as the ongoing source to keep the Penn community connected.

In the new year, expect to feel more networked to Penn than ever. More emerging talent in film and music are on the radar. More business success stories are emerging from Wharton. More videos and photos from the past and present keep hitting the DT mailbox. It's proof that it really does matter who you know - especially when you share the Penn experience.

If you haven't done so already, please click here to add the DuelingTampons widget to your facebook profile. This will help to increase awareness of our creative community to other Quakers.

Make your hopes and dreams walk the walk in 2008. And know that I am very grateful for you being a big part of DT's success.

Best,

Matt Rosler (C'96)

Lew Schneider (C'83) featured in "The Christmas Letter"

As I sit at home on Christmas morning sipping on my light egg nog and reminiscing about Hanukkah, I am enjoying a whole lot of TV marathons.

One great Christmas episode I just caught was an Everybody Loves Raymond episode, called "The Christmas Letter" written by Penn alum Lew Schneider (C'83, Mask and Wig). Lew actually is in the episode as the photographer taking the Romano family photo. (see screenshot above)

Per TV.com, here's the episode summary:

"Ray believes he has finally found the ultimate Christmas gift for his parents--if nothing else it will certainly be something they will remember forever. Ray is thrilled when he hits upon the perfect gift--a family photo that his mom and dad can treasure forever. But, when the day arrives to take the picture, Ray tries in vain to keep the peace when Debra and Marie have very conflicting opinions about the meaning of "family" in family photo."
Speaking of Lew, I just got wind that Lew is now co-Executive Producing CBS's The New Adventures of Old Christine.

What better way to celebrate Christmas day than to give you some Penn alumni Christmas related entertainment news?

While Ray Evans (W'36, Mask and Wig) and his songwriting partner Jay Livingston (C'37) wrote over 400 songs for Broadway musicals, TV and films (including the Mr. Ed theme song), they were probably best known for writing "Silver Bells".

Who knew that this classic was written by 2 Penn alumni?! ..Now you do.

Click here to read about how much money "Silver Bells" has brought them annually, and how long they'll be collecting royalties!
All I'll say is ca-ching!

Click here to watch a special performance of "Silver Bells" (with Penn composer Ray Evans on stage)

This Tuesday (12/25) Roy Vongtama (C'96) will be featured as "Dr. Yang" alongside Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman in The Bucket List. (this film comes out in major markets December 25th and then nationwide on January 11th. Click here for the synopsis.)

This real life doctor's acting career is getting hotter and hotter by the week!

On another Roy Vongtama note, be sure set your tivos because Roy will be appearing on a show called "Hot Guys Who Cook" on the Style Network on January 2, 9:30 pm. He tells me he cooks and does some yoga. Oh, this is going to be fun...

From the official Warner Brothers site, here is the film's synopsis:
"Corporate billionaire Edward Cole (JACK NICHOLSON) and working class mechanic Carter Chambers (MORGAN FREEMAN) are worlds apart. At a crossroads in their lives, they share a hospital room and discover that they have two things in common: a desire to spend the time they have left doing everything they ever wanted to do before they "kick the bucket" and an unrealized need to come to terms with who they are. Together they embark on the road trip of a lifetime, becoming friends along the way and learning to live life to the fullest, with insight and humor. Each adventure adds another check to their list."

Did you know that Penn's Abramson Cancer Center has been part of this week's NBC reality show "Clash of the Choirs"?

Per the Abramson Cancer Center site, "Philadelphia fixture and favorite Patti LaBelle is leading the Philly choir. Ms. LaBelle has been deeply affected by breast cancer in her family, and one of her long-time friends was also a patient at the Abramson Cancer Center . If Ms. LaBelle and her Philly Choir win the competition, she has chosen the Abramson Cancer Center and our With Our Voices program to receive the prize money.

Unfortunately, because I got this notice too late (and I decided to take a break from TV this week..sorry!), voting is now over and tonight is the finale. Let's all cheer for Patti's team!

One man. One costume. Another class project film.

And no, I'm not referring to this costumed guy...

Check out this super film project recently uploaded to DuelingTampons.com...

Logline:
"The Flash is an old washed-up superhero who is getting really sick of all this Spiderman garbage. He realizes he needs to get back in shape or else DC Comics will revoke him of his superhero status. He gets his chance at a comeback when a girl is in trouble and Spiderman might not come through this time..."

Enjoy!

The other day, I posted about Off the Beat's (OTB) "Snakes on a Plane" performance. (you'll note that a little bit of controversy from a former Glee Club member ensued in the comments section.)

Well, additional OTB videos have also just surfaced from their 2007 Spring show.

What was so special about this show was that it was Off the Beat's big 20 year alumni show. To celebrate their 20 year anniversary, Off the Beat had invited all alumni back.

Click here to see who came back and what they all did together (this is great!)

Gabriel Mann (C'95) and Jeremy Silver wrote and performed a beautiful song called "Make a Wish" for the Make-A-Wish's songwriting contest.

Although they came in 2nd place, this is a clear 1st place winner in my book.

make a wish
g. mann/j. silver

It’s hard to see
Where it all began
Did I really disappear?
Was a part of me
never really here?
I’m gonna find it

make a wish
Take a stand
You know I’m trying hard to understand
I’ll open my eyes
I breathe the air
I got these dreams and I’ll take you there
When you know I’ve had enough of this
So i make a wish

well I played that part
i’ve worn those clothes
and they always fit just fine
but when the day is done
the only one i want is mine

make a wish
Take a stand
You know I’m trying hard to understand
I’ll open my eyes
I breathe the air
I got these dreams and I’ll take you there
When you know I’ve had enough of this

every day, starts the same
i feel okay, but it’s harder and harder
to take my chances one by one
here they come again
you know I’m gonna

make a wish
Take a stand
You know I’m trying hard to understand
I’ll open my eyes
I breathe the air
I got these dreams and I’ll take you there
When you know I’ve had enough of this
So i make a wish

Over the past year, I'm discovering more and more alumni in different entertainment related professions (see the "Profession" pulldown in the header above to see what I'm talking about)

Specifically, I'm discovering more and more alumni in journalism.

One alum I just found out about is Stephanie Sy (C'99) who has recently been named Asia correspondent for ABC News.

Stephanie has been a part of some cool award-winning coverage and has been involved in some very interesting world-wide stories.

Actress Vanessa Mizzone (C'99, Pennfest 2004 co-host) just posted a VERY FUNNY short called The Road to Stardom about a young woman who goes in for a job interview and has no idea just how famous she'll become.

Oy boy. This video is essentially a response to a popular, yet disgusting video many people may know about that is going around on the web. The video you're about to watch is very funny and very not safe for work (unless you're watching this with earphones).

Jesse Schneiderman (C'05) has come out with a new clever scrabble themed short called "Passive Aggressive Scrabble" that I really enjoyed.

If Andrew Dudum (W'11) were to try out for any of Penn's a capella groups, odds are he would have surely made it.

Instead this talented undergrad is continuing on a solo track he started before he even got to Penn.

Per the DP, a few weeks ago Andrew was selected to headline the Rock the Mic for Darfur concert which helped raise funds for the Darfur Alert Coalition. Besides that, he's on an independent record label and already has a CD released.

This guy definitely has the chops and has a good tone to his voice. He's one to look out for...

Click below to watch Andrew's performances:
"Don't Wanna Fight"(live in Philadelphia)
"Church Boy"(live in Philadelphia)
"Freedom"(live in Philadelphia)
"Apologize" cover(live in Philadelphia)
"Fly with Me"(live in San Francisco)

This talented musician is also accomplished in another area which landed him at Carnegie Hall! Click here to find out!

"Notre projet final pour FRE140 a UPENN. Voila les finalistes pour Miss Francophone 2007! Bon travail!"

With the 1 semester of French I took, if I'm understanding the above correctly, I think this is a French class project video for a "Miss Francophone 2007" contest.

I think the Quad hallway is supposed to resemble a catwalk or something.

Regardless, another entertaining class project.

Because of how cold it's gotten here in Los Angeles, this morning I grabbed my Penn sweatshirt and headed to the gym. (yes, the same gym where I had my recent "not Penn state" story)

Within 5 minutes of me getting there, the "did you go to Penn" comment came out and I met Jared and then Brice, 2 alumni from the class of 2000 who I believe were both in Sigma Alpha Mu. (that makes a total of 5 Penn alumni at my gym!)

Typically, wearing my Penn sweatshirts, t-shirts and class ring lead to random Penn introductions.

Anyone out there have any stories where you've randomly met Penn folks because of some sort of Penn piece of wardrobe you were wearing? Comment below!

(Alumni out there, you know you're still wearing the one you bought when you were an undergrad. Time for a new one!)

Okay, "A"s for everybody...

About 10 minutes after I wrote about the Mgmt 100 "Buy Buy Buy" class project video, Alex Marcus (C'11) emailed me letting me know the following:

"That Management 100 Buy Buy Buy video is good stuff, but Team RHDH's Super Sweet Sixteen video is pretty awesome as well. "
This is so Wharton, isn't it?

Well, Alex is right. His clever group did a pretty funny parody for their Mgmt 100 class based on MTV's "My Super Sweet 16".
