Here's another blast from the past from someone who took a film during Penn's 1967 homecoming.

This audio challenged piece shows some students tailgating before the big Quakers vs. Harvard game on Franklin Field and then shows the game.

Be sure to check out some of what appears to be Spruce Street, the Penn Band and then wait for the 1967 Quaker at the end!

It's about to be the start of another school year and I recently stumbled upon a blog blast from the past article written by Penn alum Jeffrey Slater (C'76) that you'll be interested in.

In Jeff's nostalgic post, he recounts his time at Penn: from his beginnings, to the friends he made, to the memorable times he had there.  (FYI, Jeff is another example of multiple generations of families who have attended Penn)

I'm covering Jeff's post because I look at the pictures he has posted and no matter what year you graduated, you went to Penn with that guy in the pictures above and to the right.  It's amazing to me to think that every alum since the 1740s have had, and will continue to have their own touching golden moments of Penn preserved for their lifetime.

Here's another DT "blast from the past" story you'll all enjoy.

Alumni from the 90s and earlier might remember Murphy's Tavern (aka "Murphs") on the corner of 44th and Spruce streets. You'll remember the pitcher of alcohol, the jukebox, the basement and of course the "see you in church" greeting you got from Murph himself when you left the place.

And for those of you not in the know, after many years of surprising liquor-law violations, Murphs shut down in 1998.

But that doesn't mean our memories of the place have gone.

Or does it?

Recently, Noah Sferra (C'96) our 2011 alumni weekend DT correspondent hit the class of 1996 tents to see if after 15 years since graduating, Penn alumni would remember "what was in a Murph's Skylab". Remember? That big pitcher full of alcoholic goodness you'd get for $5 - $10 that you'd split with your table.

Also of note in these videos was Noah's response to a fellow alum, "I woke up your son and spilled a whole beer in your purse."  Some things never change.

Recently, musician Jay Matsueda (W'95) sent me a video of a bunch of random footage taken during various public entertainment events on and near PENN campus in the 1994/1995 timeframe.

The video includes:

• music by The LIDDS, Jay Matsueda (W'95), Pete Lee (C'95) and a band at a block party
• jeans wearing dancers at the Quad during Spring Fling
• two random guys adlib singing, a pig roast on Locust Walk, some black-lit party footage, a big beige block party and much, much more.

This video came to me a while back but I was holding onto it for Spring Fling time... which happens to be this upcoming weekend.

Apparently the video above took place during Spring Fling 2004 and the guy in the video for some reason didn't have a key to get into the dorm building to use the bathroom.

See what alcohol mixed with desperation will do!

Woo hoo!  This is DT's 1,000th post!

In honor of this post, I thought I'd post a special treat to all my alumni readers across the world who haven't been back to campus in quite some time.

After not being back on campus for 5 years, this past September I returned to Penn and discovered its many changes.  In the video above, I take a brief trip down memory lane to many of the locations you, my readers, requested of me on Facebook.

As a bonus, you'll see that I've integrated photos and stories from what campus was like in the 90's.

Enjoy my tour through campus which covers:

• Vagelos Laboratories (the old Chemistry building)
• Furness Building (I reference THIS incident in the video)

Being the proud Mask and Wig alum that I am, it is no secret that I love promoting anything having to do with this group which is so rich with history (dating back to 1889!).

On that note, last summer I showed you a great clip of the Mask and Wig Club being referenced in a 1937 Warner Brothers film.  And now, as part of my "Blast from the Past" series, I have another classic Mask and Wig clip!

The club has been doing their signature "kickline" forever and for years, even when I was in college, I had heard they were once on "The Ed Sullivan Show".

Last week, while I was hanging out with Kevin Bacon, I was chatting with his entourage and was turned on to a great UK Techno band called "The Egg" who will be playing in Philly later this week.

The Egg can best be compared to a mix of Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Primal Scream and Air.  ...When I listened to them (below- my favorite is "Wall"), it suddenly brought me back to my undergrad days of seeing the Pink Floyd laser light show at the Franklin Institute planetarium. Definitely some good times! (Anyone else with me on this?)



The Egg will be playing this Friday, October 30, 2009 at 941 Theatre in Philly.

Last year, I covered a bunch of vlogs HERE documenting Kevin Shapiro's (C'12) freshman year.  He did a really good job documenting his transition from newbie at Penn to full fledged student.

I recently got Kevin's vlog he had posted from last May (which also qualifies it for being part of my "Delicious Leftovers" series) and it's amazing to compare his first freshman year video to his last freshman year video, and how freshman year can transform someone (physically and in attitude). I think it was probably true about all of us (or at least me  : ) ).

In continuing my "Delicious Leftovers" week, the following 2 videos were submitted by Kiera Reilly (C'93, Director, Alumni Travel, Associate Director, Global Alumni Network) about 2 years ago and somehow they slipped through the cracks.

In the following clip, Phi Kappa Sigma raises money for Leukemia on Locust Walk via a bike "ride-athon".  How many of these "-athons" have we all been a part of in one form or another on Locust Walk?

This actually reminds me of one of the first bits I ever starred in for Mask and Wig when I was a freshman. It was called "Gamma-Lam Read-athon".  The premise of the bit had sorority sisters trying to draw attention to their "readathon" (guy on rocking chair sleeping).  After several "Gamma-Lam Readathon, check it outs" and "any spare change will do", a guy walks by and pulls out his kidney and puts it in the money jar.   The bit ended with "organ donors get no respect".  I realize as I'm writing this that this doesn't exactly translate, but it was funny.

Did you know that there was a Time Capsule buried in the Quad in 1940?

Who knew?!

According to the American Time Capsule Database, the contents of the capsule apparently contain:

• President Roosevelt's speech at the University of Pennsylvania's bicentennial celebration
• Letters from each administrative officer of the university to his successor of 100 years hence

Anyone know where in the quad this was buried exactly?

This could be one of my favorite "Now and Then Thursdays" series posts thus far...

There is a 1937 film called Varsity Show which references Penn and The Mask and Wig Club (thanks Anthony Maggio C'09!). As you'll see in the short somewhat hokey clip above, the group of band players chant Mask and Wig's age old song, "There's Only Room For One."  Of course I have a particular appreciation for this as I was in Mask and Wig myself.

That said, watch the tradition continue with the following video clip I also got my hands on thanks to Neil Radisch (C'86, Mask and Wig)....a video of the 1985 Mask and Wig group's rendition of the same chant!  The clip was from their annual show of "Irreverance Of Things Past".

As you may recall I once compared 2 Mask and Wig videos before from 1994 and 2007 (see the post HERE). As you'll note in both sets of videos in this post, it's fascinating to me that while traditions are maintained, each generation takes that tradition and makes it their own.

Back in my college years, if you had a problem, you could blow your Penn rape whistle or go to one of the blue "call" boxes on campus and dial for help.

Rest assured undergrads, grads and prospects, Penn continues to up their safety measures.

As of this past week, Penn has installed more than a dozen sirens on campus as part of the emergency alert system.  Check out the news report video above to learn more! Also listen to Maureen Rush, Penn's Vice President for Public Safety unveil the Siren Outdoor System, "PennSOS".

As Laura K. Mack (C'89) prepares herself for celebrating her 20th class reunion at this weekend's Reunion Weekend (May 15-17th), she posted some videos (see below) she took from being on campus during last year's (2008) reunion weekend.

If you haven't been back to campus in a bit, Laura takes us for a walking tour down her memory lane as she reminisces about the High Rises, Locust Walk, and the Quad to name a few of her tour stops. She then journeys into some video in the 2008 reunion tents as well.  I thought her video back into Hill House was most interesting as she attempts to visit her freshman dorm room. 

It seems like Laura has lots of great memories!  She looks forward to reuniting with her class this weekend! (fyi, Laura has organized a Hill House mini-reunion at the 1989 tent this Saturday at 1 pm)

I love how in 2009, all the undergrads use the web to promote everything from their candidacy, to fraternity parties, to fundraisers and now ...Hey Day t-shirt designs!

The t-shirt design to the left by Audrey Menco (C'10) is this year's winning design. 

Check out the other Hey Day t-shirt designs HERE.  I also thought another contender was the "Obama"-esque design.  These designs all look way cooler than the t-shirt I had back in 1995!

Check out Gyro, a clever comedic short film from Kevin Conley (C'12) about a Penn student who wakes up one Saturday morning to search for his favorite food: gyros.   No matter when you graduated, one thing that rings true in this video is Kevin's humorous depiction of Locust Walk!  Watch the video above to see what I mean!

Per Kevin's description, this takes place in the 1920's commons on a Saturday! Apparently since I've graduated, dining halls are now open on Saturdays!. I would have loved that when I was at Penn! Instead the default for me was Houston Hall's Skolnik Bagels and My Favorite Muffin (I loved me the amaretto raspberry muffin!).

This whole quest for food reminds me of the film I did in 1996 about a man who stops at nothing for love ...and his favorite food. See what I mean by watching below.
