Elizabeth Banks and UPenn and Pitch Perfect
I'm sure you've heard all about it by now, but today, Pitch Perfect, the hot, rotten-tomatoes highly rated film by Penn film producers Elizabeth Banks (C'96) and husband Max Handelman (C'95, AEPi) comes out!

If you recall, in an interview she did promoting the film, Liz had referenced a Penn a capella group from her time at Penn that she thought was "the most amazing version" she's ever heard in her life.

On a related Penn alum note, Melisa Kirkup (C'01), Universal Pictures marketing director shared a 60-second lip-dub Pitch Perfect video her team produced, featuring the hit Nicki Minaj song “Starships”!

Check it out after the jump!

UPenn and Todd Lieberman and MuppetsSince the summer we've seen some great Muppet promos, but today Todd Lieberman's (C'95, AEPi, Mask and Wig) 98% Rotten Tomatoes rated Muppet Movie finally hits theaters!

After the jump find out what Todd shared with the NY Post about how he became a stand-in puppeteer for one scene in the film ...and what caused his muppet to be cut from his own film!

3940 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA and UPenn
AEPi "Hollywood", 1993
Apparently, the old AEPi house at 3940 Spruce, originally knocked down because of THIS, has been transformed into a place for recovering organ recipients.

For the amount of "libations" that was consumed in my fraternity over the years, it seems strangely ironic that this new building will be housing recovering livers.  : )

Check out what the new building looks like after the jump!

Woo hoo!  This is DT's 1,000th post!

In honor of this post, I thought I'd post a special treat to all my alumni readers across the world who haven't been back to campus in quite some time.

UPenn TourAfter not being back on campus for 5 years, this past September I returned to Penn and discovered its many changes.  In the video above, I take a brief trip down memory lane to many of the locations you, my readers, requested of me on Facebook.

As a bonus, you'll see that I've integrated photos and stories from what campus was like in the 90's.

Enjoy my tour through campus which covers:
  • our namesake, the Dueling Tampons
  • Vagelos Laboratories (the old Chemistry building)
  • Furness Building (I reference THIS incident in the video)
  • the new Annenerg Public Policy Building (I reference THIS photo album in the video)
  • Sansom Street
  • the changed Food Court
  • Locust Walk
  • Ben on the Bench (remember THESE contest entries?)
  • Huntsman Hall (where the old bookstore was)
  • 38th Street Bridge
  • Superblock
  • 40th and Walnut
  • the former AEPi house location (THIS was the reason it was knocked down) (you've got to see this!)
  • (Because my time on campus was limited, I couldn't get everything.  So next time, I promise to get the new Bookstore, the Quad and Houston Hall!)
From post #1 to the coming months of stories I already have banked, a sincere thank you to all the current (and soon-to-be) Penn alumni for sharing your memories, enthusiasm and stories of success with me and all your fellow Quakers.  From this site, many memories have been relived, new connections made and job interviews (and jobs!) attained!  But don't listen to me, read these testimonials below....

DT Testimonials...+/-

"Just wanted to send a note to say thanks for your continued work w/ Dueling Tampons. it's one of the various e-news blasts I read most days. I really liked the one about '3 generations at Penn'."

-Jody Girgenti (C'98)

"As an outsider to the entertainment industry and to LA, DuelingTampons.com gave me an excellent jumping-off point to start my job search. It enabled me to learn about Penn alums in the entertainment industry and conduct necessary preliminary research. From there I was able to reach out to our incredible alumni network, schedule introductory meetings and phone calls, eventually land an interview, and finally secure an internship at a top Hollywood studio."

-Steve Gottlieb (C'04)

"I love what you are doing for Penn with this website. Keep it up!"

-Adam El Sehamy (C'09)

"Thanks for doing your part to unify Penn through Dueling Tampons--it's already been a great resource, and I'm only an incoming freshman. I am truly looking forward to my next four years at Penn and beyond. Thanks again."

-Haywood L. Perry III (C'12)

"Just want to thank you for all you are doing re: DT. You've reenergized my feelings toward Penn and now I have a son who will be applying to Penn"

-Jason Seiden (W'95)

"I got all misty-eyed looking at the Dueling Tampons site. I mean it gave me sense memory of Penn... of the Walk when it was cold, or being in McNeill with Abiel, or being in German class, or taking 20 extra minutes to get to class because of seeing everyone I knew on Locust Walk, or people that sat in my classes that are now really famous or important... just a great site"

-Chris Hartwell (C'95)

"Love you website..! Very fun to read - I cannot believe what alums (that are WAY younger than us) are accomplishing...very cool...!"

-Dorie Clayman (C'96)

"I'm really digging your website. It's nice to have someone keeping track of all us Quaker over-achievers."

-Jeff Levin (C'07)

The Proposal and UPenn
This past Monday, I attended the Hollywood premiere of Producer and good friend Todd Lieberman's (C'95, Mask and Wig, AEPi) film The Proposal at Hollywood's El Capitan Theater.  (Photo to right (l to r): Todd and I)

Before I get to the actual Hollywood "scene" of this premiere, I have to say that I really enjoyed this movie and it feels good to know that a guy I call one of my best friends is glowing at the response of having a hit movie on his hands.  The casting was right on the money with Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, and Betty White (plus a great scene stealer from "The Office"'s Oscar Nunez). Not only were there many funny scenes due to the pleasantly awkward tension between Bullock's and Reynolds' characters, but there was some great heart to the film as well. Definitely a great date movie.

Here's a good summary summary of the movie (per Yahoo Movies):
"When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she's actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she's tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences."
Now onto the afterparty...

Some highlights included catching up with other Penn alumni including Todd's wife Heather (Zeegen) Lieberman (C'94, SDT), and actress Elizabeth Banks (C'96) and her husband and film producer Max Handelman (C'95, AEPi).

And then I saw a bunch of celebs, but decided to approach only two.  And before I tell you what I said, I fully acknowledge the awkwardness in my attempt at conversation with some of these celebrities, yet in the following 2 cases, I felt the need to approach them:
    Betty White and The Proposal
  • I said hello to Jesse James and complimented him on how well he performed in this past season's "Celebrity Apprentice". He was very nice and thanked me. While his wife Sandra Bullock was right beside him in another conversation, I decided to save my "you were great in the movie" comment and walk away with my dignity.
  • I had to say hello to "Golden Girl" Betty White. She was extremely nice and approachable and I thanked her for all the years of laughter she brought to me (I know this sounds really cheesy, but it was sincere). She was very gracious and agreed to take a picture with me.
The Proposal hits theaters on June 19.

Executive Film producer Todd Lieberman (C'95, Mask and Wig, AEPi) just released this new very funny viral video to help promote his upcoming film The Proposal, which debuts June 19.

While Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are very funny in this video, it's the very naughty Betty White who steals the show. Check out the video above to see what I'm talking about!

Todd tells me that "The thing that surprises me most about this movie is not the amount of laughs that are in it but how emotional is plays. It truly is one of those movies where you laugh...and you cry."

UPenn

This week here are some tidbits of some upcoming films from some Mask and Wig alumni film producers:

UPenn and Norm Golightly
Norm Golightly (C'94, Mask and Wig) will be producing The Sorcerer's Apprentice for Saturn Films.

Per Variety,
"The plot centers on an average college student (Jay Baruchel), who is unwillingly recruited to work for sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicholas Cage). The sorcerer gives him a crash course in the art and science of magic to prepare him to fight the forces of darkness, including the evil magician Horvath (Alfred Molina), in modern Manhattan. Teresa Palmer will play Baruchel's love interest."

Norm's other Nic Cage movie Knowing comes out in theaters on March 20.

My past post about Norm here

UPenn and Todd Lieberman
Todd Lieberman (C'95, AEPi, Mask and Wig) will be producing a remake of The Man With the X-Ray Eyes.  .

Per Variety,
"The original starred Ray Milland as a scientist who is near a breakthrough in X-ray vision technology when his funding is cut off. Desperate to show results, the doc applies eye drops that eventually cause him to lose control over his growing powers."

Todd also has a great looking movie coming out in June called The Proposal. Per Yahoo movies, the synopsis is as follows:
"A book editor (Sandra Bullock) is forced to marry her male assistant (Ryan Reynolds) in order to stay in the country. When they travel to Alaska to meet his family, the new couple has to fake their way through a surprise wedding thrown by his parents. "

Check out the trailer below:

Also, Todd's Beverly Hills Chihuahua movie also just came out on DVD

Did you see JJ Abrams' new show Fringe last night?

If you did, you may have missed a quick shout out to Bad Robot (production company behind Fringe) exec Dave Baronoff (C'99, L'02, Mask and Wig, AEPi ). Watch the short clip above to check it out (minute 7:35)!

The show is really well done and the characters and story are well developed.  The reviews also are great...
upenn
The New York Times says:
"… as pilots go, this one is sensational, an artful, suspenseful mix of horror, science fiction, layered conspiracies and extended car chases. "Fringe" sets out to stretch the boundaries of conventional network series. …"

The Hollywood Reporter says:
"… What really makes "Fringe" so promising is that it is potentially reminiscent, in a small way, of the battle-of-the-sexes charm that once made "Moonlighting" the best hour of TV of its time. "

After I published this post,  Dr. Mark Milstein (C'97, Mask and Wig) notified me that he is quoted on the Popular Mechanics website regarding the scientific/medical accuracy of Fringe's Pilot episode.

Click here to see Mark's response to "Can LSD and probe-laden tanks connect your brain to the comatose?"

Now Todd will be producing a new film for Touchstone called Wedding Banned.

Pitch PerfectPer The Hollywood Reporter, it's been recently reported that married couple Elizabeth Banks (C'96) and Max Handelman (C'95, AEPi) are adapting the book Pitch Perfect, into a comedy set in the world of competitive collegiate a cappella". ...Apparently, the key to Elizabeth Bank's success is to B sharp (sorry I couldn't resist).

Max and Liz's first produced film, starring Bruce Willis is being shot this summer in Boston with Mandeville producer Todd Lieberman (C'95, Mask and Wig, AEPi).

And if you're not fully caught up, Liz is now shooting Oliver Stone's W, playing Laura Bush (click to see her on the recent cover of Entertainment Weekly!).

Beverly Hills ChihuahuaRecently I reported that film producer Todd Lieberman's (C'95, AEPi, Mask & Wig) will be producing a new guidance counselor film for Disney and is currently in Boston shooting 2 back to back films with some big stars

Now a new fun promo video just got released on the web promoting Todd's next new movie, Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

The plot of this film is as follows:

"A pampered Beverly Hills Chihuahua named Chloe (voice of Drew Barrymore) finds herself accidentally lost in the mean streets of Mexico without a day spa or Rodeo Drive boutique anywhere in sight. Now alone for the first time in her spoiled life, she must rely on some unexpected new friends including a street-hardened German Shepherd named Delgado (voice of Andy Garcia) and an amorous pup named Papi (voice of George Lopez) to lend her a paw and help her to find her inner strength on their incredible journey back home."
The interesting part of this is how producers like Todd (and Dave Baronoff (C'99, L'02, AEPi, Mask and Wig)) are using the web to create viral videos to help promote their films.

UPennRecently Jason James (C'95, AEPi) found my site and when he heard the name of it, it reminded him of a very "R" rated memory involving him and some friends...

"My fondest memory of Dueling Tampons: getting absolutely wasted with Matt Weinbach and two chicks whose name I cannot (or will not) recall ...removing all our clothes except our shoes and socks on the third floor of the fraternity house (all four of us)... marching out of the house, across the street, streaking through Penn campus at 1 am, and climbing the actual dueling tampons butt naked (based on this video, this is no easy task!) ...and then appearing in 34th Street in photo form (apparently taken by someone living in the Towers). "

There seems to be lots of voyeurs in the towers through the ages. Remember this recent video featuring the Midnight Dancers of Harrison College House?

Do any of you have any fun memories involving campus structures?
  • The Dueling Tampons?
  • The Button?
  • Ben on the Bench (although we've covered Ben on the Bench "pee"-related memories here)?
  • Other structures?
