Did you see Wednesday night's Private Practice? Check out minute 6:54 to see how Penn was incorporated into this episode!

The reason they probably used Penn probably had something to do with THIS.

UPenn

For our October contest, Melisa Kirkup (C'01) at Universal Marketing, was kind enough to donate a Forgetting Sarah Marshall gift package including a Forgetting Sarah Marshall DVD, beach bag, beach towel, cd and t-shirt.

...And because he suggested a whole bunch of Penn friends to me, Jeremy Saxton (C'97, ENG'97) was randomly selected as the winner of our October Contest!

Congratulations, Jeremy!

While the contest is over, you can still click this link to suggest a Penn friend to me on Facebook  : )

  • her childhood Halloween costume
  • her favorite blog
  • her husband Max Handelman's (C'95, AEPi) wig fetish
  • Her new hobby that is "fun", "unusual" and now a new addiction!
  • A funny story about a reporter who confused Liz with another celebrity!
Get the details and check out the 3 remaining clips below!

Allison Winn Scotch
It certainly is proving to be the time of Allison Winn Scotch's (C'95) life.

Her book The Time of My Life was optioned by the Weinstein Brothers, and last week was reviewed in People Magazine and made The Today Show's top 10 books for the fall.

Now news that her book made the New York Times Best Seller List! (#31). Check it out here!

The Time of My Life (per Allison) is about an unhappy housewife who has been “whisked seven years back, back to her old life, her old self, back to the moments in which she made decisions that charted her future course. And now that she’s back, she’s faced with the same roadblocks and obstacles, only this time, armed with hindsight, she can choose a different path and finally lay to rest all of her "what ifs.”

“From the outside view, Jillian Westfield has a pitch-perfect life. Her cherubic 18-month old daughter, her wildly successful investment banker husband, a four-bedroom, five-bath, lemon-scented home with landscaping and neighbors to match. But that doesn’t stop her from mulling over the past, from pushing away the "what ifs" that haunt her when she allows them to seep into her consciousness. What if she hadn’t married Henry? What if she hadn’t abandoned her job at the first sign of pregnancy? What if she’d never broken up with Jackson? What if she answered her mother’s letter? Because underneath the shiny veneer of her life, Jill waddles around in a faltering marriage, brewing resentment, and an air of discontentedness.

But after an ethereal massage in which her therapist releases her blocked chi, she wakes up to discover that she’s been whisked seven years back, back to her old life, her old self, back to the moments in which she made decisions that charted her future course. And now that she’s back, she’s faced with the same roadblocks and obstacles, only this time, armed with hindsight, she can choose a different path and finally lay to rest all of her "what ifs."

Much more than a story about a real life desperate housewife. Instead, it speaks to so many of our tiny, lingering doubts, the same doubts that send us googling old friends and exes or wistfully pulling out pictures of days gone by. And through Jillian’s journey, in which she rediscovers the mother who abandoned her, reacquaints herself with the strengths she once deemed important, and may literally rewrite her future, we all get a chance to peek inside the windows of our own "what ifs," and consider if the path we took was the one that has granted us the most happiness.”

More news of Hollywood alumni working together.

Jake Avnet (C'05, Co-Chairman of Undergraduate Film Advisory Board, Founder of the Lecture Series, "Talking Film") produced a short film called LAST MEAL with Penn alum writer Tracy Park (W'05), Micah Fitzerman-Blue (Harvard grad), and director Mark Stern (Princeton grad).

This short film has been the recipient of two very prestigious grants:  the Special Project Grant from the Peter Stark Producing Program at USC, as well as the Panavision New Filmmaker's Grant.  The film stars Fran Kranz (The VillageMatchstick Men, and the upcoming TV series "The Dollhouse"), and Nikki Griffin (Dukes of Hazzard and The Fast and the Furious).

Per Jake,
"Fantasy becomes reality in this action/comedy about a suburban couple that ventures into a diner and find themselves in the middle of a "situation".  A man seeking vengeance for the death of his father has finally tracked down the culprit, the chef and owner of the diner."
Jake and his crew have just recently begun the festival run, and have been accepted into AFI Fest 2008 -- one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. The film will screen in competition at the ArcLight theater in Hollywood, on November 6th and 7th. For more information, please visit the blog: http://lastmeal.wordpress.com

Jake's zest for film production seems to have been passed down from his talented Penn alum director/producer father, Jon Avnet (C'71). Click here for some of my past posts about Jon.

Click here to find out how Jake got his start as a producer and what other big projects he has in the works.

Two weeks ago I wrote a post about how Executive producers Todd Shotz (C'96) and Andrew Oldershaw (C'02), as well as writer/director Dan Kay (C'97) created four very viral "No on Prop 8" viral videos.

This past week, in a first for an American political campaign, the NO on Prop 8 campaign paid to air the clever video you see above - which was originally produced just for the web by our Penn alumni supporters.

So far, this video has aired during Jimmy Kimmel, Daily Show, Colbert Report, and Saturday Night Live.

Be sure to go out and vote tomorrow everyone!

Did you see The Office last Thursday? On the episode, to spite Andy, Dwight decides he wants to go to Cornell (Andy's alma mater). Watch the 20 second exchange above to hear a mention about Penn!
