We've seen all sorts of entertainment on Penn's campus, but this video takes it to new heights.

Literally.

Back in September I saw a great video of a classic sketch that Mask and Wig did from their 2007 Free Show. It was especially fun to see how that sketch had evolved from when we did it in my day.

Having been in Mask and Wig as an undergrad and having seen the shows since, I can say that the "evolution" of a sketch has always been a way for each class to have fun with the bit and claim it as their own.

So...

As part of my new weekly Now and Then Thursdays series, I decided this week to take a trip down my "Mask and Wig" memory lane and compare via video(!) the same skit done in 2007 as I(!) did in 1994.

I thought since the new season of Lost premieres tonight, this post was timely.

Click here to find out which 2001 Penn alum was featured in a pivotal episode from Lost and what new film he appears in this weekend.

Here’s a flashback for all of you.

For all of you Lost fans out there, do you remember the last cliffhanger scene from the Season 2 Finale when two men in the arctic make contact with the missing group of travelers of Oceanic Flight 815? Turns out Penn alum Alex Petrovitch (C'01, Member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Men's Varsity Soccer, Men's Cycling) played one of these two men.

Check out Alex’s headshot and all of our Penn headshot hotties here!

Besides also appearing in The Bold and the Beautiful, Passions & General Hospital, Alex tells me that he’s starring in a new film called Passage to Zarahemla, an action-adventure Mormon movie which takes place in Utah. (you can see a clip of his performance in his reel)

The film opens in Southern California, Idaho, Hawaii, and Las Vegas this weekend. (It began its theatrical release in Utah, October 2007, and has grossed 250K at the box office thus far.)

Did you catch actor Robert Gant (C'90, Penn Six) on last week's "Magda and Jeff" episode of Nip/Tuck?

Robert played the gold digging husband of an eighty something year old(!) who insists her husband check into the McNamara-Troy plastic surgery center to add more hair to his body. Robert was very funny in this episode. See for yourself...

Watch Scene 1: "So Tell me what you don't like about yourself"

Watch Scene 2: He gets a mustache

It’s a done deal. They’re frozen.

As I reported here and here, Penn alum award winning entertainment reporter Emily Frances (C’89) was the subject of a 3 part, very personal story on NY’s CW11. Emily has now aired the final part of her personal story of undergoing a procedure to freeze her eggs.

I recently got an email from Eric Barker (C'94) a former feature writer who is currently in Boston getting his MBA and wants to leverage his entertainment/media experience in the business world.

"First semester's over so I need to start internship hunting," says Eric. "I'm trying to reconnect with some Penn people and meet some new folks. What's the best way to go about building on my Penn network?"
Great question.

As the former Penn Club President here in Los Angeles and Executive Producer of Pennfest (our now 6th annual emerging film and music festival), this has been a question I continue to get from aspiring undergrads and alumni anxious to get into the biz.

Click here check out my advice in 8 steps to Eric ...and all of you.

Click here to find out which TV and film star is hosting Mask and Wig's 10th annual Intercollegiate Comedy Festival.

Started in 1998 by Cloverfield associate producer Dave Baronoff (C'99, L'02, Mask and Wig), Mask and Wig is now celebrating its 10th annual Intercollegate Comedy Festival with host Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live, Nickelodeon's All That, & star of film remake of Fat Albert.

Groups performing on this night include Penn's Mask and Wig Club, Princeton's The Triangle Club, Boston College's Hello Shovelhead, University of Maryland's Sketchup.

Past hosts include Ana Gasteyer, Bob Saget, Kevin Nealon, Stephen Colbert, Tim Meadows, Gilbert Gottfried, and Dan Bakkedahl.

As you can see by the picture above, Kenan often dresses in drag on SNL. It would be awesome if he did that for this upcoming show and interacted with Mask and Wig! Check back for photos and video from the show!

Phyllis Zimbler Miller (WG’80)’s novel “Mrs. Lieutenant: A Sharon Gold Novel” has been nominated as a semi-finalist for the first Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award competition.

Phyllis’ story is a personal one based on her own experiences in 1970 as one of 4 women who came together when their husbands went on active duty as officers in the U.S. Army.

Click here for synopsis of the book +/-

“They had their whole lives to look forward to if only their husbands could survive Vietnam.

In the spring of 1970 – right after the Kent State National Guard shootings and President Nixon’s two-month incursion into Cambodia – four newly married young women come together at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, when their husbands go on active duty as officers in the U.S. Army.

Different as these four women are, they have one thing in common: Their overwhelming fear that, right after these nine weeks of training, their husbands could be shipped out to Vietnam – and they could become war widows.

Sharon is a Northern Jewish anti-war protester who fell in love with an ROTC cadet; Kim is a Southern Baptist whose husband is intensely jealous; Donna is a Puerto Rican who grew up in an enlisted man’s family; and Wendy is a Southern black whose parents have sheltered her from the brutal reality of racism in America.”

One review from the Amazon book page for MRS. LIEUTENANT:
“All the books and movies I've seen about the Vietnam War are from the point of view of men. So it's really exciting to have a book that focuses on the point of view of women during that tumultuous time, and even more so women whose husbands have just voluntarily joined the army. I particularly appreciated the news items at the beginning of each chapter so that the context of the women's world is clear. And I enjoyed reading the information about how to be a good officer's wife. Taken all together, I think this is a unique and important look into a specific segment of women during a divisive period in American history.”

According to Phyllis, “I wrote this novel to preserve a record of a significant historical period for women – the experience of the wives of officers during the Vietnam War. I saved all the original documents from when I was a new Mrs. Lieutenant in the spring of 1970, and this novel is a dramatic representation of my experiences. I’m now working on MRS. LIEUTENANT IN EUROPE, which will involve being an officer’s wife in Germany during the Cold War – with even more original documentation.”

Check out the first few pages of the novel here and add a review of your own
(According to the competition instructions, the more reviews the more likely the judges will pay attention to Phyllis’ novel during the judging for the 10 finalists.)
