Since he graduated Penn in 2000, Rob Sachs (C'00) has spent the past 10 years working in radio and has now recently branched out into the world of publishing.
Tomorrow (Tuesday, 5/11), Rob returns to the Penn bookstore from 6-7 pm to discuss his new book What Would Rob Do?: An Irreverent Guide to Surviving Life's Daily Indignities
Rob's book is the product of his own podcast of the same name and offers tips on lessons ranging from how to get past a nightclub bouncer to what to do you when you get a big zit or how to avoid going to a chick flick. This book gives Rob's take on life's awkward and embarrassing moments as well as tips he's received from experts including Erik Estrada ("How to act around a celebrity"), Fabio ("What to do when you're underdressed for a party"), Air Supply ("How to write a love song") and Tom Wopat aka Luke Duke ("How to avoid stage fright").
For all of you aspiring journalists and authors, Rob tells us exactly what his career path has been from Penn until now...
Per Rob,
"My career in radio started at Penn - I was a DJ on WQHS and eventually went on to become the station manager. I also started working for WXPN on the program Kids Corner and worked doing basketball and football games for Penn Sports. It was through a conference that WXPN paid for me to attend that I made connections at NPR. I've been working here for 10 years doing everything from reporting to directing to producing to hosting my own podcast which became the basis for my book."Below, in one of Rob's segments from his site, he talks about how to avoid embarrassing moments when getting a professional massage.

Did you see the exclusive ESPN interview Tiger Woods did last week about his return to Golf?
Kiera Reilly (C'93) emailed me to let me know that the journalist interviewing him is Penn alum Tom Rinaldi (C'88). I know the subject matter was delicate and you can hear that in the very careful tone of Tom's voice.

Over the past 2 years I've reported about some female UPenn alumni journalists reporting the news on NY's WPIX, ABC's "Good Morning America", ABC News and ABC News Now.
Let's now add one more great "winning woman" anchor to the list...
Rebecca Stewart (C'96, TriDelt) is the weekend morning anchor for Fox 61 in Connecticut. Check out her reel above!
As for how Rebecca got into the news...? Rebecca tells me,
"I always loved news. I thought it combined the cerebral and the theatrical: two things I loved. Reporting gives me the chance to write and tell people's compelling stories in my own unique way. I consider myself a storyteller and a producer more than a personality. When I graduated from Penn, I bought a one way ticket to Buenos Aires. There, I worked for a newspaper (The Buenos Aires Herald) and realized, this is what I want to do. So-- I came back to the States, got my Master's and here I am."
On a personal note, Rebecca and I graduated from Penn together and I remember that both she and her good friend actress Elizabeth Banks (C'96) were some of the great actresses on campus at the time. In fact, I remember having both Rebecca and Liz help me do a script reading for a short script I had written in Mark Lapadula's screenwriting class.

Just a week ago, I posted a story about THESE former college roommate lawyers with a jewelry business. Now news of another alum with a TV day job with a similar side passion for designing jewelry!
When she's not producing and writing for "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" on Fox News, Kim Rittberg (C'02, UA, Kappa Alpha Theta) is a jewelry designer with her own jewelry line - k ritt jewelry.
The line has been featured in Women's Wear Daily, Life & Style, Playboy, NY Daily News, nymag.com, Scheckys, CW11, NY1, Newsday, NY Post, worn by Heidi Klum and Sarah Silverman and has been sold at Henri Bendel in New York and other boutiques in Manhattan.

In light of his new recently released Evolver album, John Legend (C'99, Counterparts) was interviewed by 2 different Penn alumni for 2 different mediums.Last week, Penn alum and WPIX Entertainment Reporter Emily Frances interviewed John (see video above). Emily filled me in on some John Legend tidbits that I didn't know:
- Legend is a musical prodigy.
- He started playing the piano at the age of 4 and he started attending the University of Pennsylvania when he was only 16-years-old.
- To fit in with the college crowd, he joined an acapella group (Counterparts).
- Legend was the first in his family to attend college and after he graduated, he worked at Boston Consulting Group for 3 years in NY while he was trying to make it.
- He was an English major and lived in Butcher his freshman year.

Watch the clip above of Anderson Cooper's visit to UPenn this past Saturday. In this opening clip he brings a little levity to the room.
Anderson Cooper then goes on to talk about his experiences as a journalist and dishes out advice, telling students to "seek out what scares you the most."
In the clip below, Anderson answers a question about news during the beginning of Iraq.

I've been covering all sorts of "Penn in the Olympics" news all week at DT and now I've got some more!
Andrea Kremer (C'80), the reporter that interviewed all the Olympic swimmers, including Michael Phelps after each and every gold medal he won in Beijing, is a Penn alumna! She’s worked for ESPN before switching to NBC about a year or so ago. She primarily covers NFL football.
Watch Andrea interview Michael Phelps, Peter Vanderkaay, Ricky Berens and Ryan Lochte after taking gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
Thanks to Kiera Reilly (C'93, Alumni Relations) for the scoop!
Check out the Gazette article on Andrea from 1997
