UPenn and Stacey Bendet and Fashionista and Project Runway

Over the past couple of years on "Project Runway", we've seen this mega fashionista guest judge and this Penn alum appear as a contestant.

Last night a 3rd Penn alum appeared on the show and guest judged alongside Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia and Michael Kors. And we learned she's "not a fan of voluminous wee wee pads" and she "loves sparkle".

UPenn and Roy Bank and The Mentor and Bloomberg TV
Earlier this week, TV producer Roy Bank (C'94) launched his new NBC gameshow.

Now there's another show of his that got picked up for a second season and he's looking for small business owners.  The show is sort of "Apprentice" minus the celebrities and minus the competition.

It's called "The Mentor" and it hooks up small business owners with top CEOs for "a crash-course mentorship on transforming business dreams into reality"(previous mentors have been executives from Jamba Juice, 1-800-Flowers, Seventh Generation and The Boston Beer Company, Inc.)

I've done a ton of stories on Penn alum and undergrad entrepreneurs, so I know there are some of you who are perfect for this.

After the jump, learn more about the show and how to apply!

After the jump, more about this alum ...and the sexy, bordering on NSFW marketing campaign that may make you gasp!

UPenn and NBC and Sonny Lee
A couple years back I did a post on Sonny Lee (C'03, Penn Six, Full Measure, Penn Admissions) on how his entertainment job sucked and how he then took matters into his own hands which jump started his Hollywood writing career. (a very inspirational read)

Well it's certainly been getting sunnier for Sonny.

More about the big writing deal he made this year and his new TV pilot!

Quick Film Budget

Adam Lebovitz (W'03, Hillel, Smokes Quizzo) and his brother launched a new website which is a revolutionary breakthrough for filmmakers in film budgeting technology.

How and why did Adam come up with this?

Per Adam,
"We thought of this idea during the worst part of the recession where my brother and I looked at each other and asked, 'There must be something out there that we can make faster and better?'  I remembered how tough it was to learn the film budgeting software Entertainment Partners Budgeting and afterwards filmmakers would hire me to create budgets.  Professional budget makers often charge at least $1,000.00 per budget and take a month to deliver.  So my brother and I set out to create a budgeting website that asks several specific questions, like 'What is your desired total budget?  What genre is your film? Are there child actors in your film?' and automatically creates a professional film budget customized to your script/project."
It was a combination of Adam's experience producing films (Tortured starring Laurence Fishburne released by Sony, Unrest released by Lions Gate) and his understanding of mathematics and computers that allowed him to create the website.

Incidentally, you may recall the post I did last year about Adam optioning Craig Boreth's (C'91, First male drummer in Bloomers pit band) book, "How To Feel Manly In A Minivan". Since then he has set it up at Red Wagon and is looking for a TV writer to develop it.

UPenn entrepreneur

Back in the day I remember passing Sigma Chi and the guys would always be playing some sort of Volleyball game with beer cups in their hands.

Well Sigma Chi alum Brent Wagner (C'04) decided to turn those days into a business for which he is now in the running to win $50,000 ...and he needs your vote!

Brent's company "The Day of Games" is a leisure sports gear, events and apparel company which provides competitive products ranging from leisure sports leagues, to outdoor games including bocce ball, horseshoes, cornhole, ladder toss and more.

Hill Country Restaurant and New York CityTo kick things off for my Penn Foodies series, here's a great inspirational story about one Penn alum entrepreneur who went from the telecom world to tremendous success in the restaurant world.

After working in the telecom world for a number of years (Centric Telecom, eLink Communications), Marc Glosserman (C'96, Sigma Chi) went on to earn his MBA from Columbia University where he won seed funding for his first restaurant venture, "Hill Country Barbecue Market", by the school’s Eugene M. Lang Entrepreneurial Fund’s new business plan competition.

Not only is "Hill Country" considered a hot new restaurant in NYC (30 West 26th Street), but it has been given great reviews by the NY Times, NY Magazine and The Wall Street Journal to name a few.

And what makes his restaurant so unique? I'll give you a hint. You're going to need a lot of napkins!

It's all about Texas barbeque at "Hill Country" ...and it stems from Marc's grandfather who was the mayor of Lockhart, Texas where his family dates back four generations.

Per Marc, as a child,
Hill Country Barbeque"I looked forward to my Texas visits, where I indulged in all the local traditions, including eating smoked sausages and barbecue at the legendary Kreuz Market, drinking Big Red Soda, cooling off with Blue Bell Ice Cream, and enjoyed the sounds of Austin’s rock, blues and country music. Whether I was listening to my grandfather’s proud tales of growing up in the Lone Star State, or traveling with family and friends through Central Texas “Hill Country,” these are the memories that inspired me to open a New York City restaurant to honor the barbecue and live music capital of Texas."
Tell me you're not salivating after watching that video above! Incidentally, the most popular item is the Brisket (Marc’s favorite is the Prime Rib!).
"No other barbecue place that has opened in recent years has gotten it so right, right out of the gate. Hill Country is one of the finest new barbecue spots to open in New York in quite some time. The brisket is a thing of balance and beauty." -NY Times
And with the quote above, I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you order!

Check out his menu below! +/-

...And if you think you've seen the "Glosserman" name before on DT, you're right.  Let's not forget about Marc's younger successful filmmaker brother Scott Glosserman (C'99, Sigma Chi, Friars)!

Hill CountryGet in touch with Marc: marc at hillcountryny.com

Visit Hill Country and be sure to tell Marc you read about him on DT!
