The three month old Hollywood writers strike could be hopefully coming to an end tomorrow (2/9) when writers guild members gather in L.A. and New York to consider a proposed contract.

In the event that there are further delays, Brian Appel (C'01, Mask and Wig) has a fun new reality show video (spoof) he edited that he wants us to consider:

"As the writers strike -- FOX gets REAL. "Annie...the REALITY!" is a feel good family show in which 12 orphans compete for the heart -- and home -- of Daddy Warbucks. You can bet your bottom dollar it's a hard knock life, but for ONE of these girls the sun will come out TONIGHT...on FOX! 8pm"

I wonder if reality producer Mark Cronin (Eng'86) has this one somewhere in development.

After recently reporting about his next Jessica Biel film, Neil Parris (C’01) will now be executive producing a film adaptation of the book "Girl of the Moment" for Fox Atomic.

Per Variety, the book “is a comedy about a teen girl who lands a once-in-a-lifetime chance to intern for a famous teen starlet, thrusting the heroine into a glamorous and catty inner world of young celebrity.”

Speaking of Hollywood internships, undergrads, have you applied for the Academy of Television of Arts and Sciences Internship yet?

Over the decades there’s always been competition in the Penn libraries. It is true now as it was back in my day.

As we saw in one of my previous posts, Ben Grinberg (C’11) shows us that there are all sorts of characters one can find in Penn libraries. Specifically, he noted the “Library Ostrich” and how this character is “territorial and easy to anger” and “it would be a bad idea to cross her.”

Well in my “Now and Then Thursdays” series this week, I want to show you a class project video I did back in 1996 for Paul Buck’s class featuring one of these “Library Ostriches” and the comedic consequences of when she is crossed.

Featuring Jared Miller (C’97) and Julia Oh (C’98)

Eric Augenbraun's (C'10) and Stephen Stewart's (C'10) idea for a prank may very well turn into a potential web video series called "The Collegiate Bum".

Apparently Eric and Stephen were thinking of a way to prank their friend. They were determined on creating a fake DP article talking about how their friend was homeless and managed to make his way through Penn without having a dorm or apartment, never paying for books, etc. ("owing in part to the ridiculous price of a Penn education" Eric says).

Eric tells me, "we thought the idea was too good to waste on a prank and we were both interested in making a web series. We made the little trailer that night and we liked the response to it so we decided to go through with it."

The team is working on the writing for the first episode right now and it should be out by Feb. 28. Stay tuned!

Click here to check out "The Collegiate Bum"
Starring Eric Augenbraun (C'10), Isaiah Greene (C'10), Paul Pennington (C'10), Chidi Ahaghotu (C'10), RJ Ferguson (C'10), and Erin Marshall (C'10).

Speaking of broke Penn kids, this reminds me of Angela Nisel (C'98) and her book The Broke Diaries. Angela was an early blogger back as an undergrad who documented her daily humorous accounts of her struggles trying to make it through Penn on little money. As a result of her unique voice, she landed up in Hollywood writing for the TV show Scrubs (and was even featured on an Oprah episode!).

Were you at the Los Angeles Penn event on Monday night (February 4) where Penn President Amy Gutmann announced "Making History", Penn's new $3.5 Billion Capital campaign?

President Gutmann talked about the exciting changes coming to Penn's campus, showed a very engaging promotional video and even quoted Woody Allen!

The fancy event was at the Beverly Hills Hotel and was packed with 500+ alumni(!), many of whom I haven't seen in years! (I spent much of the night filling alumni in on DuelingTampons.com and was happy to hear the great response I got from people of all ages about this site and its name!)

If you missed the event, check out these DuelingTampons.com exclusive videos below from the event!

Penn actors Roy Vongtama (C'96), Lesley Wolff (C'93) and Alex Petrovitch (C'01)

UPennIn this week's Tuesday Tips series, I have enlisted the help of my Penn alumni actor friends out here in Los Angeles to offer advice to the Penn undergrad or alum who has decided to move out to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

Between the three of them, Roy Vongtama (C'96), Lesley Wolff (C'93), and Alex Petrovich (C'01) have done TV, Film and stagework and have offered up some great advice to all of you including answers to the following questions:

Who are the best acting coaches?
Who are some good photographers to take my headshots?

Where should I get my headshots done?

For today's Mardis Gras celebrations, I have an especially topical Hollywood post for all of you.

Here's one Hollywood writer with something to be happy about.

Josh Heald's (W'00, Editor-in-Chief 34th Street Magazine('99), Penn Jazz) first movie, Mardis Gras is getting produced. And this writer is working with another Penn alum producer to get it made.

Per Josh,

"The comedy follows three college seniors on a trip to Mardi Gras that is supposed to make up for their lackluster college experience. Once they're met with the reality of 100,000 sweaty people crammed into 8 city blocks, their challenges mount and friendships are tested, as they vow not to return to school without a story to tell. ...And there's naked boobs, of course, because boobs are awesome."
Click here to find out how Josh got his start as a writer in Hollywood, who will be starring in the film and what other Penn alum producer he's working with!!

Did you know that the Penn engineers build a race car every year for an annual collegiate competition?

Formula SAE is a collegiate competition held every year in May in Michigan. Around 120 schools compete with open cockpit race cars powered by motorcycle engines.

According to Gregor Zetsche (Eng '08), "Formula SAE started 4 years ago, and currently is sponsored by the engineering school as well as other sponsors (GM, Daimler and lots of other companies). We build the car in the Towne building on campus. Its entirely built by students from the school, most of which are mechanical engineers. We've had lots of people do internships at GM and other car companies, but we've only had about 4 people graduate since the teams inception. One of the alumni (Laurence) actually worked on the new Hummer H3."

With as hot a year as she's had (and an even hotter year to come), it's no wonder why Elizabeth Banks (C'96) is on the prestigious March 2008 Vanity Fair "Hollywood's Fresh Faces" cover!

Liz is on the cover with Emily Blunt, Amy Adams, Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, Alice Braga, Zoe Saldana, and Ginnifer Goodwin.

There certainly are a good number of digital animations coming out of Penn these days.

Brendan Marnell (C'05) created a very cool short called "The Lift" for his Fine Arts thesis project from his 2005 senior year.

Per Brendan, "It's a short animation about a character leaving the world he knows to enter a future he cannot predict. He faces rejection, but ultimately finds a path for himself. Looking back, I think it has a lot more to do with my own situation of leaving school than I realized at the time."

Can you see this in the video?

Brendan currently works as an animator and graphic designer outside DC.

...Reminds me of another video I posted about a few months ago having to do with graduating from college.

Did you see Marc Platt's (C'79, Glee Club) movie trailer for his upcoming film Wanted during the first half of today's Superbowl? It looked really cool. (Marc's previously produced projects include Legally Blonde and Broadway's Wicked)

Wanted stars Angelina Jolie and comes out next June. Per Yahoo Movies, here is the Wanted plot synopsis:

"25-year-old Wes was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox. After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutors--including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan--Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny. "
