He is a creative force in television. You’ve heard of every show he’s touched. And make no mistake, Hollywood is buzzing about him 24/7.
In my 12 years in L.A., I’ve met every major player in the business who matters and who shares our Penn pedigree. And now, you will too. As I launch the Pennalicious Profiles, at the same time I scoop the big trades Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety on one of our own. DT gets it first again.
All next week, our exclusive sit down with your fellow alum now considered one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. What he says guaranteed his rapid rise to the top.
Stay tuned for my Pennalicious profile on him next week!

In honor of Passover starting this weekend, here's a little Jewish humor for you all.
Joel Rubin (C'03, Mask and Wig) produced a "Wii Dream Games" spoof segment package for G4's television show X-Play. Look for Joel (in image above) featured in the "Mazel Tov: A Bar Mitzvah simulator" segment. He's chanting part of his Torah portion and using the Wii control as a yad!
...If this game gets made, it looks like it just may give this Penn entrepreneurial alum a run for his money.
Watch all five of Joel's "Wii Dream Games" here!
Joel started freelance writing and producing video game reviews for X-Play a year and a half ago. Now that he's full time, he's also working on comedy bits, interviews, and other pieces. Watch this space for more from Joel!
Speaking of video games, have you checked out my previous post onMichael Highland's (SEAS'07) documentary on his addiction to video games? It's fascinating!

Recently Jason James (C'95, AEPi) found my site and when he heard the name of it, it reminded him of a very "R" rated memory involving him and some friends...
"My fondest memory of Dueling Tampons: getting absolutely wasted with Matt Weinbach and two chicks whose name I cannot (or will not) recall ...removing all our clothes except our shoes and socks on the third floor of the fraternity house (all four of us)... marching out of the house, across the street, streaking through Penn campus at 1 am, and climbing the actual dueling tampons butt naked (based on this video, this is no easy task!) ...and then appearing in 34th Street in photo form (apparently taken by someone living in the Towers). "
There seems to be lots of voyeurs in the towers through the ages. Remember this recent video featuring the Midnight Dancers of Harrison College House?
Do any of you have any fun memories involving campus structures?
- The Dueling Tampons?
- The Button?
- Ben on the Bench (although we've covered Ben on the Bench "pee"-related memories here)?
- Other structures?

While Loren Mendell (C’95, Class President, Friars) has worked with fellow classmate and Penn alum Rob Pearlstein (C’95) on the Hollywood shorts Matumbo Goldberg and the Oscar nominated Our Time is Up, he’s no stranger to Documentary filmmaking.
In fact, he's quite prolific.
In his latest documentary, Mexico: The Business of Saving Trees, Loren travels with BBC-World reporter Jason Margolis to a remote Mexican forest for the Frontline/World Social Entrepreneurs Series. There they show how a protected reserve can thrive with the dedication of a single schoolteacher who hopes to raise money on the carbon market.
Loren has produced several documentaries, including another environmentally-focused piece on an oil spill in the Philippines, also for PBS Frontline/World.

Per out.com:
"When it comes to program-ming for children and adolescents, the president of Disney Channel Worldwide probably has more clout than anyone else on television. Since his appointment in 2004, Ross—who is responsible for 62 Disney channels and offshoots including CDs, toys, games, clothes, and international tours—has spearheaded tween juggernauts Hannah Montana and the Emmy-winning High School Musical, whose 2007 sequel attracted the largest audience ever for any basic cable telecast and spawned a soundtrack that became the number 2 album of 2007."
Pretty impressive...
Speaking of Rich, last week, he just confirmed in the trades that Disney is now writing High School Music 4. Can someone say cash cow?
Ever since I've been at Penn, I know Rich has come back from time to time to speak to undergrads looking to get into entertainment. He has been very helpful to both undergrads and alumni...
Back in 2003, Rich was a panelist in our Penn in Pictures event with Todd Lieberman (C'95, Partner at Mandeville Production company) and Joan Harrison (C'81, Bloomers, then Literary Agent).

One of my reasons above
After I posted my Now and Then Thursdays: Accepted at Penn article, I got the following email from high school senior Carissa Clark:
"Hi again - so I was just watching the video you posted and saw underneath that you were accepted into both Cornell and Penn. I have the same dilemma. I'm almost positive I will be attending Penn. What were some of the things that shaped your decision?"
So what shaped my decision?
Click here to find out what shaped my decision and the decisions of a ton of our undergrads & alumni!
(be sure to add your story as well!)

John Legend (C'99, Counterparts) was on campus at an Obama rally performing his new song "If You're Out There". Apparently, this is a new song he wrote last week for the Obama campaign because he was inspired by the young people out there getting involved with the election. A pretty appropriate rally song if you ask me.
Check out some of the other songs he performed:
"Take It Slow"
"Get Lifted"
"Ordinary People"
"Good Morning"
It's always fun when celebrities come to campus to endorse candidates. ...Like when these celebrities came to Penn back in 1993 to support Bill Clinton.
Speaking of John Legend, catch an appearance John made on the Ellen Show a couple months ago!

He's an actor and a singer and he's performing in the ensemble of a hot musical here in Los Angeles.
DJ Gregory (W'03, Off the Beat) is now performing in the ensemble of the cast of Marc Platt's (C'79) Wicked (8 shows a week!) at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles, and also understudies the lead role of Fiyero. This October, DJ debuts in the Bret Easton Ellis feature film, The Informers (starring Winona Ryder).
In addition to being an actor, DJ (going by "David James") is an acoustic rock musician. Last year he released his debut EP, 'West River Drive,'. Listen below to this fantastic song of his...
Click for the meaning behind this song!...+/-
Per DJ:
"I always tell the story at live shows that 'I Don't Want To Be Your Friend," is about the 'friend-zone.' It's about that place you get to when you allow someone, who you long for romantically, to be your friend. And then because of how close you get to them, and how intimate your friendship is, they can't risk losing you, so they don't allow themselves to consider you romantically. I think the title is long, but I thought it was important to say exactly what it is. It's that moment when you realize that your heart is too strong to ignore, and you just lay it out there. I'm done. Here it is. This is what I need. I don't want to be your friend."
How awesome is this song? Tell me you can't already hear this playing on the radio or the montage music of a TV show or film?! Alumni out there, take note!
....I'm hoping we'll be able to be lucky enough to have DJ perform in a future Pennfest.
Find out how DJ got his start and for which popular show he left Penn for a year to tour with (this is cool!)
