UPenn and Rob Pearlstein and Warner Brothers and Ed Helms
Rob
After Rob Pearlstein (C'95, DP) and Loren Mendell's (C'95, Friars) short film was nominated for an Oscar in 2006, they went on to create a funny web series about a unique sort of adoption.

Rob had also gone on to create a short film dedicated to all the pregnant ladies out there, while Loren was focused more in the world of documentaries.

After the jump, find out about the pitch Warner Brothers just bought from Rob ...and what TV show Loren directed which airs tonight!

UPenn and Loren MendellFrom his documentaries about oil spills to prison baseball teams, DT favorite filmmaker Loren Mendell (C'95, Friars) has now shot a new touching documentary you'll want to check out which premieres this Sunday night (June 20) on Fox Sports (or Comcast or MSG Plus - depending on where you live).

In "REPLAY Season 2", two rival high schools in Detroit take the ice 11 years later to replay a 1999 hockey game that almost cost a young man his life.  Based on the trailer above, this looks to be a very touching story!

Find out what time and station it airs in your region HERE

UPenn and Rob Pearlstein and Baby Bump

UPenn and Rob Pearlstein and Baby Bump
After his short film was nominated for an Oscar in 2006, Rob Pearlstein (C'95, DP) went on to create another funny film that caught our attention.

Now, Rob has created what seems to be a sure viral video sensation called "She Gotta Bump", a song as he says, "for all you beautiful pregnant ladies".

Watch this very funny video after the jump ...and his reference to pickle farts. (look out for Rob in minute 1:57)

Over this year, I've talked on DT about how we've been dealing with this economic downturn with tips from some of our alumni.

DocumentaryBut how do you think the economic downturn has affected undocumented farm workers? Documentary filmmaker, producer and director Loren Mendell (C'95, Friars) journeys into this world with writer/reporter Jason Margolis and shows us that many of these undocumented workers are resistant to speaking up out of fear that they will be deported.

On that note, these undocumented farm workers are often taken advantage of with low pay, long hours and no overtime.  Do you think this is fair or do you think it is a price to pay for being in this country illegally?  Watch Loren's very interesting short documentary above and decide for yourself!

Speaking of Loren, back in July, I posted about how Loren was nominated for an award for his documentary about shock jock Petey Green.  Loren informed me that he won(!) ...thanks in part to all you the DT readers who voted!

Oscar Nominated Alum Colin Campbell (C'91, President of Intuitons, Without A Net, Penn in Pictures 2001 panelist) has created a great 4 minute video he directed for Instant Films, a 48 hour Los Angeles film festival. Colin drew the script and then the cast out of a hat on Saturday morning and by Sunday night he handed in the finished film.

And Colin is no stranger to directing films by any means. In fact his short film "Seraglio" was nominated for an Oscar back in 2000. This was a great film that we showcased in our first Los Angeles Pennfest 2002 (photos HERE, program HERE) and am trying to see if we can get it posted on DT at some point soon.

"Delicious" is definitely on the not-safe-for-work side.  ...So much in fact that the video and the image I'm using for this post associated with this film can only be seen when you expand the post by clicking HERE.

*Besides Colin, we actually have two other Penn alumni whose short film was nominated for an Oscar in 2006.  Get the scoop HERE and watch their film!

From documentaries about oil spills to prison baseball teams, filmmaker Loren Mendell (C'95, Friars) documentary which was featured in this year's Slamdance is now on TV this week.

Loren's latest film Adjust Your Color: The Truth of Petey Greene tells the unlikely story of America's first shock jock Petey Greene and features Howard Stern, Marion Barry, Sugar Ray Leonard and James Brown among others.

Per Loren, "America’s original shock-jock, Petey Greene, overcame poverty, drug addiction and prison-time to “tell it like it is,” shocking and entertaining everyone from the ghetto to the White House. During an era of civil unrest in our nation’s capital, Petey used taboo words and ideas, forcing people to confront their own prejudices on his raw, uncensored TV and radio shows. His explosive language and brash style unsettled the establishment as Petey battled both the system and his own demons on the journey to becoming a leading activist during some of our country’s most turbulent years. Don Cheadle, who portrayed Petey in the feature Talk To Me, narrates this documentary featuring a face-off between Petey and an up and coming deejay named Howard Stern."
"This documentary presents rarely seen footage of Petey Greene. It’s a must for anyone who wants to know what made Petey Greene such an incredibly charismatic person, or whomever wants to know where Howard Stern got his gusto from.”

DocumentaryWhile Loren Mendell (C’95, Class President, Friars) has worked with fellow classmate and Penn alum Rob Pearlstein (C’95) on the Hollywood shorts Matumbo Goldberg and the Oscar nominated Our Time is Up, he’s no stranger to Documentary filmmaking.

In fact, he's quite prolific.

In his latest documentary, Mexico: The Business of Saving Trees, Loren travels with BBC-World reporter Jason Margolis to a remote Mexican forest for the Frontline/World Social Entrepreneurs Series. There they show how a protected reserve can thrive with the dedication of a single schoolteacher who hopes to raise money on the carbon market.

Loren has produced several documentaries, including another environmentally-focused piece on an oil spill in the Philippines, also for PBS Frontline/World.

Even after 13 years since graduation two Penn filmmakers are still collaborating and doing some high level Hollywood projects together.

In between picketing during the big Writer's Strike, Rob Pearlstein (C'95, DP) wrote*, directed and acted in a new, very funny short MATUMBO GOLDBERG (Rob is featured far right in movie poster). Along with the film's producer and fellow classmate Loren Mendell (C'95, Class President, Friars) they produced this short which already has Hollywood buzzing about a potential series and feature.

MATUMBO GOLDBERG is about a trendy, none-too-bright couple who adopts an African baby, only to find their new son isn’t quite what they expected. The film stars Anthony Anderson (The Departed, Transformers, Law & Order) and J. Robin Miller (Andy Barker P.I., General Hospital)

(*fyi, per the Writer's strike guidelines he was allowed to do this nonpaid video during the strike)

Update: Rob and Loren turned their original Matumbo short into a web series for Comedy Central/Atom.com, starring Anthony Anderson and Jenna Elfman. More here

Rob's path to becoming a Hollywood creative force went from starting as a copywriter at an ad agency to becoming a finalist in a HIGHLY reputable contest while Loren's path had him starting at a big Hollywood talent agency and going onto film school. Then in 2006 they came together to work on a short that was nominated OSCAR (featuring Kevin Pollak and LOST's "Hurley")!
