UPenn

Transitioning now out of our "Delicious Leftovers" series to bring you some exciting entertainment tidbits from our alumni and undergrads:

  • Lots of celebrity dealing with our alumni this week
  • She's casting For A new TV show
  • She will be starring in a new thriller as a prisoner
  • A Hot Los Angeles Penn event you'll want to go to on September 1!
  • Free music!

Lesley Wolff
"Reality Hell", the faux-reality show that Lesley Wolff (C'93, Bloomers) casts for, recently debuted on E! (Sunday nights).

"Most reality shows have people looking for their 15 minutes of fame. Reality Hell will have people wanting to give their's back! The reality genre has all but taken over television programming, making stars out of regular people. Now E! is turning the tables on all those reality-star wannabes by staging a show where the whole cast is in on an act to set up one unknowing reality-show contestant. Staged scenarios include an over-the-top modeling competition with extreme challenges, wacky contestants and insane judges and a family swap that will have the mom trying to find a way to escape the crazy Hollywood clan she's been placed with. This summer on E!, Fake is the new Reality!"
I've watched this show and the part I look forward to is the end of the show at the moment when the actors tell the victim they're on "Reality Hell" and the person that is being pranked doesn't know what "Reality Hell" means until they realize all the actors are laughing at them.  It's briliant!

My past posts about stand-up and casting director Lesley Wolff HERE

Quentin Tarantino
Jordana Horn's (C'95) interviews Quentin Tarantino (!) about his new film, Inglorious Basterds HERE

...Jordana also reviews the film for the Wall Street Journal. Read all about "Torah and Tarantino" HERE

...And speaking of Inglorious Basterds, read the early review HERE that Brian Tran (W'10) wrote last May for our Penn in Cannes '09 series

Elizabeth BanksElizabeth Banks (C'96) to star with Russell Crow in Next Three Days

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Liz "will play the lead role of Laura, a woman who is imprisoned for a murder she claims she didn't commit, as her husband, the recently cast Russell Crowe, desperately tries to vindicate her."

I will tell you I recently saw Liz in the thriller The Uninvited. Liz definitely plays evil real good... in that she creeped me out real good.   She reminded me of Rebecca De Mornay in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.

John Legend
John Legend (C'99, Counterparts) will be performing at the Greek Theatre on Tuesday, September 1 at 7:30PM.  Join PennClubLA for this fantastic event.  Tickets can be purchased on the PennClubLA website HERE  Come hear great music and network with new people.

+ For more information about his tour, click HERE

Malik Smith

Speaking of John Legend, Malik Smith (C'10), a similar sounding (undergraduate!) artist I covered HERE is giving all of us his 1st single "Crazy" for free HERE

GoodfellasOf the success of his past viral video hit "I'm the Kind of Guy You Meet at 4am", Matt Rittberg (Penn Law 2005) has now come up with a funny spoof based on Goldman Sachs outrageous compensation and Wall Street excess.

Earlier this year, Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman's CEO, sent out a memo telling his top employees not to buy anything flashy with their bonuses. Matt's video above is a parody of the scene in Goodfellas after the heist where De Niro tells his mob guys the same thing! Is Goldman stealing from the American public?

Watch this video and decide for yourself!

UPenn BioPond
More summer cleaning to do for my "Delicious Leftovers" week with the following 2 videos I've been hanging onto for quite some time now. (Thanks for hanging in there!  I've got lots of fresh new stories coming up starting tomorrow!)

Here is a short film of the Biopond at Penn.  In all my years during and after Penn, while I knew this existed, I honestly don't think I ever went to this place located behind the Quad(?).  If you're like me, enjoy the following video and get acquainted with what seems to be a very tranquil place:

And here's a 2008 Founder's Day Event showcasing the Phi Delta Theta chapter at Penn. I've passed this fraternity a million times with it's big St Bernard dog, but again, I don't think I ever actually went inside it.  (I think I was too entrenched in the AEPi, ZBT, SAM, and Mask and Wig circles.)   In the video below there are shots of Phi Delt's inside.

In continuing my "Delicious Leftovers" week, the following 2 videos were submitted by Kiera Reilly (C'93, Director, Alumni Travel, Associate Director, Global Alumni Network) about 2 years ago and somehow they slipped through the cracks.

UPenn's Locust WalkIn the following clip, Phi Kappa Sigma raises money for Leukemia on Locust Walk via a bike "ride-athon".  How many of these "-athons" have we all been a part of in one form or another on Locust Walk?

This actually reminds me of one of the first bits I ever starred in for Mask and Wig when I was a freshman. It was called "Gamma-Lam Read-athon".  The premise of the bit had sorority sisters trying to draw attention to their "readathon" (guy on rocking chair sleeping).  After several "Gamma-Lam Readathon, check it outs" and "any spare change will do", a guy walks by and pulls out his kidney and puts it in the money jar.   The bit ended with "organ donors get no respect".  I realize as I'm writing this that this doesn't exactly translate, but it was funny.

Speaking of Locust Walk, check out this "Fall" nighttime video:

UPenn's Locust WalkFor decades now, if you want to get any sort of attention on Penn's campus, you're going to do something whacky on Locust Walk.

As you've seen here on DT, I've covered all sorts of posts related to Locust Walk including
Now, I've got another video I've been holding onto which begs the question, "what the hell!?"  This videos is described as "Bleeding Wings: Performance with body extension in a public place".  It reminds me a bit of Kathy Change from my time at Penn.

The action starts at the 35 second mark. (and by "action", I mean "reaction" from everyone passing this woman)

Anyone have any more insight into what this was?

UPenn LeftoversI've been running DT for 2+ years now and as much as I try to, sometimes I don't get around to posting everything that comes my way.

...This doesn't mean I delete the items I have, I just bank them for weeks like this one.  That said, after my weeklong "Penn Foodies" series, I thought it was fitting to run what I'm calling my first "Delicious Leftovers" series.

This week I will be serving up some of the fun posts and videos that slipped through the cracks over the past 2 years that I'm sure you'll all get a good smile out of.

Look out for posts this week which include:

  • some talented undergrads with good grips (you'll see what I'm talking about!)
  • A MUST-SEE: the remaining 10+ Q&A videos with our panel from Penn in Pictures 2008
  • random, very funny occurrences on Locust Walk (these never cease to amaze me!)
  • perspectives of Penn's campus you may not have seen before
  • an entertaining series of videos paying tribute to those who are a staple at Penn
  • plus lots more!
Be kept in the loop and sign up for the newsletter below or follow me on Twitter!

(In the meantime, check out my other DT series by looking down the right-hand column of this site)

My Penn Foodies series week wouldn't be complete without one last healthy scoop of fun.

Before Robert Gant (C'90, Penn Six) appeared on "Queer as Folk", he played the Good Humor Ice-Cream Man in a commercial!

Good Humor Robert Gant

Who knew?!

Check out this commercial above and enjoy!

...And check back this week for another FUN series of mine that you will see is very appropriately themed after all the posts I've shared with you last week!
