UPenn and Zach Lutsky and Parenthood

Over the past couple of years, Dr. Zach Lutsky (C'97) appeared on the Dr. Oz show, and was the medical consultant for "Miami Medical" and "ER".

Last week, what started out as a behind-the-scenes TV medical consultant role turned into a small acting cameo for Zach in a scene with Erika Christensen on NBC's season finale of "Parenthood".

Zach Lustky and UPenn

Did you see Dr. Zach Lutsky appear on the "Dr. Oz" show last week?

On the show, Zach talked about the "golden hour" of medicine which refers to the time period lasting from a few minutes to several hours following a traumatic injury where immediate medical treatment most likely will prevent death.

Zach then shows us how to save a life after a trauma (plus there was a nice promotion for "Miami Medical", the CBS show for which he is a medical consultant).

After the jump, watch the segment to find out the 3 steps Zach will teach you that may help you save someone's life (it was a good lesson for me!)

UPenn and Zach LutskyAt last year's Penn in Pictures event, Zach Lutsky (C'97, AEPi) talked about his experiences working as a medical consultant on the hit show "ER".

Now Zach tells me about "Miami Medical", the new Jerry Bruckheimer CBS drama he's been working on that debuts on April 2.   And if you saw the Superbowl yesterday, you would have seen the trailer for this new show during the 3rd quarter.  Otherwise, check it out above!

Per Zach,
"I was intimately involved with the writing and choreographing of ALL of the medical scenes in each of the first 13 episodes. I still work as an attending emergency physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center."
Miami Medical" is Jerry Bruckheimer's first medical drama about a "trauma-only" hospital in Florida. It is based on a real "trauma-only" hospital in Miami that is one of three such hospitals in the United States. It tells the story of a team of trauma surgeons handling the sickest and most severely injured trauma patients from accidents in and around Miami.

Yesterday, I posted video of TV writer (and Penn in Pictures') host Lew Schneider (C'83) talking about his beginnings in Hollywood.

Today, I continue my Penn in Pictures series with great video of Zach Lutsky (C'97). Not only is Zach an attending physician in Emergency Medicine at Cedars-Sinai medical Center, but he has worked as a medical consultant on:

  • and is currently in his second season as an on-set medical technical advisor on "ER."
  • Most recently, he also was the medical technical advisor on the new John Wells pilot, "LAPD."
In the videos above, watch Zach talk about his beginnings from Penn - to Dr - to Dr. Hollywood!

(l to r): Lew Schneider (C'83), event producer Reg Tigerman (C'07), Zach Lutsky (C'97),
Sherri Cooper Landsman (C'94) and Jason Resnick (C'92)

"How do I break into the entertainment business?" is the number one question Penn alumni and undergrads always ask of me.

In late October, the Penn Club of Los Angeles hosted its annual Penn in Pictures event at ICM and those who attended got some answers from some of our successful alumni panelists.

These paneslists included Jason Resnick (C'92) (Universal acquisitions), Sherri Cooper Landsman (C'95) (Brothers and Sisters Writer), Zach Lutsky (C'97) (ER Medical Consultant) and moderator Lew Schneider (C'83)(Everybody Loves Raymond, New Adventures of Old Christine)

If you missed the event, not to worry!  For the first time, we have recorded the event and starting tomorrow (for the next 2 weeks), I will be sharing with you the videos from all of our panelists and more importantly, the 20+ questions that our alumni asked of our panelists including the ever popular question on "how do I get into the business"!

Check back here on DT, you'll definitely want to know what our panelists said!  (sign up for the free newsletter below to get the updates delivered to your email!)
