"Some co-workers are a pain in the ass, but this one's a pain in the neck."

Enjoy "The Office Vampire", a funny Halloween video starring actress Vanessa Mizzone (C'99). (She's the office worker with short hair.)

Vanessa starred in another office related video earlier this year, which is not-safe-for-work... and awesome! Check it out here!

In anticipation of her Zack and Miri Make a Porno film coming out this Friday (October 31), there are a bunch of videos going around the web featuring Elizabeth Banks (C'96) and Seth Rogan. Some a little more strange (and I say that in a good way) than others. Take a look at the ones I've found above...especially the top one.

With the coming out of her W and Porno movies in the same month, Liz has definitely reached the most exposure she's gotten yet!  This month I've seen her appear:
...Also, this week there was news that Liz may not be coming back as Betty Brant in Spiderman 4.

With at least 2 more movies coming out in the next few months, it should be interesting to see where this all takes Liz!

Wharton

Ever thought of a business idea but didn’t know how to get it funded?

WhartonWell, now in its 11th year, The Wharton Business Plan Competition has produced some REALLY cool projects. Per their site, "Last year's grand prize winners took home $20,000 and rang the closing bell on the NASDAQ stock exchange."

During this year-long educational experience, students may participate in three phases that provide milestone-driven deadlines. Students receive feedback from business experts, attend workshops, meet with mentors, and vie for a spot as one of eight finalists in the WBPC Finals in April. At the WBPC Finals teams compete before a panel of venture capitalists and other experts for cash and in-kind prizes to propel the launch of their business. This year’s finals will be held on April 29, 2009 in Wharton’s Jon M. Huntsman Hall.

And this competition is not only open to undergrads and grads ...but potentially alumni for competing, judging and sponsoring (more below).

Last year's, winning products included:

1) Products that allow doctors to target radiation specifically to solid tumors.

2) A simple and easily-adoptable process to functionalize plastic and rubber surfaces. This post-manufacturing spray process, called InnlayTM embeds active particles into nearly any plastic or rubber, creating durable and functional product surfaces. Applications include anti-microbial surfaces, biosensors, and RFID tags.

3) SmartSock, a prosthetic accessory that is worn on the residual limb of a transtibial (below-knee) amputee.

Things to know:
1) Founded in 1998, the WBPC is managed by Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs and a management committee comprised of students from throughout the University of Pennsylvania. Open to all Penn students, the WBPC has annually drawn more than 150 student teams comprised of more than 300 participants from nearly every school in the university.
2) Although sponsored by the WCNY, Wharton (or Penn) alumni from anywhere can participate. Teams submitting a plan need just one member who is a Wharton alum and there is at least one "degree-candidate student" at Penn
3) The program is now in its 11th year
4) Wharton is looking for alumni qualified judges. If you're an alum who is invovled in biz dev/venture capital, something for you to consider! Contact Megan Mitchell, Sr Associate Director, Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs, mmitch2@wharton.upenn.edu
5) The competiton is looking for company sponsors (you'll get high visibility). If you're an alum  who is looking to raise your company’s visibility in front of some of the most creative and innovative students at the Univ of Penn, contact Megan Mitchell, Sr Associate Director, Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs, mmitch2@wharton.upenn.edu.

More about submitting to the competition here
Submissions are due November 14th, 2008 @ 2:00pm(EST) through the WBPC Website.

The Scrapkins

UPennThe deals keep coming for illustrator-author Brian Yanish (C'95, Mask and Wig, Friars) and his eco-friendly kids character property, The Scrap Kins.

If you recall from my previous posts , Brian created The Scrap Kins from his childhood drawings! The Scrap Kins are a group of creatures that live in a recycling center and build a world out of the things people discard. The Scrap Kins mission is to foster eco-awareness, promote recycling and encourage kids to use their imagination. The Scrap Kin's Do-It-Yourself resourcefulness empowers children to create and make a difference in their environment. (Ages 3-7)

He reportedly signing 3 new licensing deals with manufacturers (Aljan Corp, Some Publishing, and Lafayette Puzzle Company) to produce Scrap Kins back to school recycled paper stationery, sticker calendars, and puzzles. Keep an eye out for Scrap Kins kids products in stores in 2009!

Check out Brian's newly designed website at http://www.thescrapkins.com
(You can meet the characters, view our Green Tips, download desktop art & craft projects and order Scrap Kins organic tees and onesies.)

Allison Winn ScotchA few weeks ago I posted that Allison Winn Scotch's book The Time of My Life came out in bookstores all over!  If you recall, this was the same book that the Weinstein Brothers optioned to make a movie out of.

Now news of Allison's coup of her book being reviewed in last week's People Magazine  and it just made The Today Show's top 10 books for the fall (see video above minute 2:55)...alongside authors like Dennis Lehane, Wally Lamb and Anita Shreve.

The Time of My Life (per Allison) is about an unhappy housewife who has been “whisked seven years back, back to her old life, her old self, back to the moments in which she made decisions that charted her future course. And now that she’s back, she’s faced with the same roadblocks and obstacles, only this time, armed with hindsight, she can choose a different path and finally lay to rest all of her "what ifs.”

Allison Winn Scotch

Read a full synopsis of The Time of My Life here...+/-
“From the outside view, Jillian Westfield has a pitch-perfect life. Her cherubic 18-month old daughter, her wildly successful investment banker husband, a four-bedroom, five-bath, lemon-scented home with landscaping and neighbors to match. But that doesn’t stop her from mulling over the past, from pushing away the "what ifs" that haunt her when she allows them to seep into her consciousness. What if she hadn’t married Henry? What if she hadn’t abandoned her job at the first sign of pregnancy? What if she’d never broken up with Jackson? What if she answered her mother’s letter? Because underneath the shiny veneer of her life, Jill waddles around in a faltering marriage, brewing resentment, and an air of discontentedness.

But after an ethereal massage in which her therapist releases her blocked chi, she wakes up to discover that she’s been whisked seven years back, back to her old life, her old self, back to the moments in which she made decisions that charted her future course. And now that she’s back, she’s faced with the same roadblocks and obstacles, only this time, armed with hindsight, she can choose a different path and finally lay to rest all of her "what ifs."

Much more than a story about a real life desperate housewife. Instead, it speaks to so many of our tiny, lingering doubts, the same doubts that send us googling old friends and exes or wistfully pulling out pictures of days gone by. And through Jillian’s journey, in which she rediscovers the mother who abandoned her, reacquaints herself with the strengths she once deemed important, and may literally rewrite her future, we all get a chance to peek inside the windows of our own "what ifs," and consider if the path we took was the one that has granted us the most happiness.”
