Did you see Charlie Herschel (C'01) on last night's Survivor Gabon?

Check out minute 2:30 above where a smitten Charlie aligns himself with fellow Kota tribe member Marcus.  From the looks of it, it seems like Charlie's pulling the strings.  From watching previous seasons of Survivor, I think he'll go pretty far in the game.

What do you think?

So I found out what the deal was with yesterday's random pillow fight on Locust Walk.

This makes me laugh actually.

The pillow fight was apparently a "flash mob", which is a large group of people joining together, doing a random activity for a short amount of time, and then leaving.

Per an anonymous source,

"I'm not sure who organized the pillowfight, and part of the point of flash mobs is that they're usually spread by word of mouth, and the organizers take little to no credit. Also, each flash mob differs, it's not necessarily the same people. The mob is just comprised of whoever heard about the event and was interested.

The idea for flash mobs stems from improv everywhere, an interactive improv group which would do things like send 50 shirtless men to shop at abercrombie. This one's [below] probably the most famous example. Improv everywhere had hundreds of people go to grand central, and at a specific time, everybody froze in place for five minutes [see video below for reference].

Looks like another successful comedy is being made by one of our alumni.

"Harold & Kumar" writers Jon Hurwitz (W'00) and Hayden Schlossberg will write and direct the comedy "'Til Beth Do Us Part" for Warner Bros.

Per The Hollywood Reporter,

"The feature will focus on two twentysomething males whose close friendship is put to the test when one of them becomes engaged."
Jon is currently in the early stages of casting for the film and he will also be writing a third "Harold & Kumar" film (and has an option to direct).

UPenn

I've posted two of freshman Kevin Shapiro (C'12) vlogs so far here and he's been having the time of his life.

But, uh oh.. work is settling in for Kevin and he's now talking about:
  • not having enough time in class.
  • The UA elections happening on campus (and 1/5 of the class seems to be running!)...And listen to Kevin's thoughts on why he thinks everyone’s running.
Speaking of UA elections, remember these videos from last year’s elections?  I haven't seen any videos from this year's elections, but freshmen, feel free to post here!

Watch Kevin's 3rd vlog here

From squirrels, to fiddling, to jesters throwing balls, I thought I saw it all on Locust Walk...

Not sure if this is a new tradition, but there are students on Locust Walk having one really big Pillow fight..?

What's going on here? Anyone?

Roy BankGet this...

So there's a "New York Reality TV School" founded by Robert Galinsky to help people actually get ONTO their favorite reality shows.

And President of Merv Griffin Television Roy Bank (C'94) is in final talks to create a reality show out of this.

Per Portfolio.com,

"The series will begin by following him [Galinsky] as he works to expand the school from the fly-by-night operation it now is into an internationally-franchised operation. "We are going to move from a mom and pop shop to a full-blown business," he says.

Like many reality series, it will have an elimination-style format, although Galinsky says he would like to have multiple winners to encourage the formation of alliances. The prizes, he says, will include "both first-look auditions on current shows and a full pilot production produced by Merv Griffin."
And this cracks me up...Galinksy is quoted as calling the show "an uber-meta-circular-clusterfuck of camera seducing camera seducing cast seducing viewer."

I will watch this for sure!

upenn
Since her days as an undergrad, it seems that Rachel Skerritt (C'99, GSE '99) likes to be involved in as much as possible.

This author ...and High School Principal(!) just published her third novel (her other books here) this year, entitled WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DOWN (Kensington - Dafina Books).

Rachel's books are contemporary fiction and per Rachel can be branded African American fiction, because most of the characters are African American, or as "chick lit," because the central characters are female.

When The Lights Go DownPer Rachel,
"My books tend to address the age group of the main characters, and the issues that people of that particular age group face.  TRUTH BE TOLD is about coming of age on a college campus, very much inspired by my time at penn.  NO MORE LIES captures that time when you're out of school and living on your own and trying to figure yourself out.  WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DOWN focuses on folks who are turning thirty and making those major life decisions about career, family, and lifestyle.
Rachel tells me that she was originally C'99 but graduated a year early to spend the extra year getting a masters.) In addition to this she was involved in the following activites: Admissions Tour Guide, Service Learning through the Center for Commnunity Partnerships, Writer for The Vision (Penn's African American Student Newspaper), Graduate Advisor for DuBois College House, Writing Advisor in Writer's House )

upennWhat inspired Rachel to start writing? ...Which famous Penn alumni have been mentors to her? ...And what are her tips to YOU? The answers got me chuckling... Find out more here!

Click here to read a quick synopsis and the first chapter to WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DOWN ...+/-

ONCE YOU BECOME A VIP ... IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO GO BACK.

Kahlila Bradford keeps a written record of all of the qualities she wants in her mate. With hundreds of items on her list and counting, it's no wonder that she's still single. Realizing that she could stand to cut loose a little, Kahli decides to leave Boston for a spell and spend a sizzling summer in Harlem - no lists and no limits.

Once in New York, Kahli meets the one man who can actually exceed her expectations. Darius Wilson is the hottest thing in R&B, with charisma to spare and a genuine interest in what Kahli thinks of his music. It isn't long before Kahli is dying to give him more than just her opinion, and she suddenly she is center stage at the side of a celebrity.

But autumn's arrival means returning home and getting back to reality. Now it's time for Kahli to ask herself some serious questions about how much she's willing to give up to keep living in the spotlight, and what's really important ... when the lights go down.
