I've covered stand-up Matt Ritter (L'02) on DT before and all the great viral videos he's created (my favorite one being THIS one).
If you recall, like many Penn alumni making career changes, Matt has transitioned careers from being a lawyer to a standup.

Tonight, Aaron's first one-hour Comedy Central special kicks off with this complaint and then runs the gamut from drunken friends who always start fights, to couples who take pictures of their feet while on vacation, to the singles table at weddings being filled with people in relationships.

Comedian Whitney Cummings (C'03) is definitely getting around and becoming a Comedy Central favorite.
She roasted Joan Rivers (and it was harsh!) and recently David Hasselhoff (also harsh!).
This weekend, she has her own Comedy Central special airing (8/21, 11:30 pm/10:30c) and I'll let the title of the show, "Money Shot" speak for itself...

Lesley introduces her Fresh faces line up and does some stand-up about her
love for Barry Manilow, followed by the very strange booty texts she has received.
I've done great posts on this very funny and well connected Los Angeles stand-up/casting director before. And now Lesley Wolff's (C'93, Bloomers) popular Los Angeles workshop starts up next week and you can be a part of it! If you've ever wanted to do stand-up, but were afraid, Lesley is the person to train under! I've been to several of her shows and she really knows how to bring the funny out of novice stand-ups.
Per Lesley,
"The Fresh Faces workshop is a 5 week workshop taking you from never doing stand up to a 5 minute set at The Hollywood Improv. The class is all about finding your individual point of view and getting personal . If you have a life you're a comedian. It's a fun energized class that takes the mystique out of the daunting process of creating a set and leaves you with a slight addiction to getting up on stage. Of the success of his past viral video hit "I'm the Kind of Guy You Meet at 4am", Matt Rittberg (Penn Law 2005) has now come up with a funny spoof based on Goldman Sachs outrageous compensation and Wall Street excess. Earlier this year, Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman's CEO, sent out a memo telling his top employees not to buy anything flashy with their bonuses. Matt's video above is a parody of the scene in Goodfellas after the heist where De Niro tells his mob guys the same thing! Is Goldman stealing from the American public?

Last year I did a post about Whitney Cummings (C'03) being one of Entertainment Weekly's "12 Future Stars of Comedy". As you'll see in the above preview clip from this Sunday night's Friar's Club Joan Rivers roast, it is apparent why Whitney was given this title!

I've got a cautionary tale to share from lawyer turned stand-up comedian Matt Rittberg (Penn Law 2005) about the guys a girl meets if she stays out too late.
Last spring, I wrote a post about Matt's now he has just debuted his first musical comedy video called "I'm the Kinda Guy" and it is funny! So funny in fact that I decided not to wait to publish this for my Funny Friday series. And watch this video through til the end to learn about the other kinda guy you girls out there can also meet!
So what was the inspiration for this video?
Per Matt,
"A lot of my standup focuses on relationships and the ridiculous things guys say to try to get girls when they are trying to hook up (ex- the line about having an extra pair of gym shorts and the "no jeans" in the bed rule is something everyone who is single has said or heard before). Also, I lived in the Meatpacking district in NY, and I always see drunken girls stumbling out of bars at 4 am and random creepy guys hitting on them on the streets at hot dog stands etc. Watching those interactions (and occasionally partaking in them) inspired the song. More than anything, I hope it doesn't come off as misogynistic...after all, I'm warning girls and probably breaking some sort of guy code by giving away some of our dirty tricks!"
Since my last post about Matt, he actually quit his job as a lawyer to pursue comedy and is writing full time now. He's moving to LA in September to seek representation and chase the dream!

Penn Los Angeles stand-ups, Lesley Wolff (C'93) and Jessie Schneiderman (C'05) are in a new web series called "So Fun, Right" about a 30 something out of work writer (Lesley) who moves in with a young hip Hollywood hottie (Jessie). Lesley and Jessie really are so great in these that watching them will actually make you cringe a bit (in a good way!)
Plus the videos are shot very well ...much like "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Office".

Another alum just made another Hollywood list.Stand-Up Whitney Cummings (C'03) just made Entertainment Weekly's Top 12 future stars of comedy.
Per Entertainment Weekly,

The wickedly raunchy comedian — she wrote for the Bob Saget roast — finds time between incessant gigs for films (Made of Honor) and TV (MyNetworkTV's The Tony Rock Project).Recently, I asked Whitney about which activities at Penn helped put her on the road to becoming a stand-up...
Why She Thinks She'll Be Big: ''If I don't, I'm gonna make a sex tape with Aziz [Ansari]. There are no shortcuts, so I tend to be a workaholic. My hobby is my job. I'd be doing it for free. Which I think a lot of us do anyway.''"
Per Whitney,
"I had a show on the Penn tv station that was a goofy cooking show with a friend of mine. I took Carolyn Marvin's class on the first amendment at Annenberg and it made me want to challenge taboos, and I tend to do that in my work as a stand up -we had a bunch of discussions and classes on Carlin's words you can never say on television-it got me really into carlin, even more so than i already was -that had a huge impact on me-and it made me want to push the envelope in whatever I ended up doing in my life. That class really made me interested in taboos and if you've seen my stand-up [see video above] you know I tend to explore and play with a lot of them. I tend to push the boundaries on network television and dive in to topics that society deems inappropriate - and whenever I deal with censorship it makes me think of that class I took at Penn.

Did you catch comedian Aaron Karo (W'01, Pennfest 2006) on the Craig Ferguson show this past Friday night? He performed a really solid act discussing his ruminations ranging from what it means to "go out" for "dudes" and "chicks" ...to his clever late night booty calls. Check out the clip above!
Aaron seems to be making quite a name for himself. In addition to his books, touring the country with his act, and this Craig Ferguson show performance, Aaron recently launched a new website: Ruminations.com

We Penn alumni like to take on as much as we can after college. ...There's Roy Vongtama (C'96) who is an oncologist, as well as an actor.And now I'm learning about another Penn professional who is pursuing a second career ...in comedy.
When he's not a lawyer, Matt Rittberg (Penn Law 2005) performs as a stand-up in New York's comedy scene. Recently Matt was named a finalist in Resident Magazine's search for "New York's funniest resident".
