Ever since the Dueling Tampons were constructed at Penn in 1973, they've gotten lots of flack.

After the jump, find out which organization has recently deemed the structures as "questionable taste in outdoor sculpture."

UPenn and Hollywood

A couple weeks ago, during her spring break, I met with Chloe Castellon (C'11), a senior about to graduate from Penn looking for advice on how to navigate through the Hollywood job market using Penn alumni.

That week, Chloe was on a mission to take as many meetings as she could with Penn alumni in anticipation for her post graduation move out to LA.blush

After the jump, take a lesson from Chloe and find out how she scored 50 meetings with some of the most successful Penn alumni in the industry.

upenn and the covenant and philadelphia and university of pennsylvania
At last night's open house party celebrating the new location of the Penn LA office, I got the chance to meet Michael Lovitz (C'86, Penn Singers, Glee Club), a great enthusiastic former Penn campus tour guide.

As if he took a page right out of the "Penn tour guide book", in the video above, listen to Michael as he explains the deeper meaning behind the "Covenant" (aka our "Dueling Tampons").

Did you know this?

Woo hoo!  This is DT's 1,000th post!

In honor of this post, I thought I'd post a special treat to all my alumni readers across the world who haven't been back to campus in quite some time.

UPenn TourAfter not being back on campus for 5 years, this past September I returned to Penn and discovered its many changes.  In the video above, I take a brief trip down memory lane to many of the locations you, my readers, requested of me on Facebook.

As a bonus, you'll see that I've integrated photos and stories from what campus was like in the 90's.

Enjoy my tour through campus which covers:
  • our namesake, the Dueling Tampons
  • Vagelos Laboratories (the old Chemistry building)
  • Furness Building (I reference THIS incident in the video)
  • the new Annenerg Public Policy Building (I reference THIS photo album in the video)
  • Sansom Street
  • the changed Food Court
  • Locust Walk
  • Ben on the Bench (remember THESE contest entries?)
  • Huntsman Hall (where the old bookstore was)
  • 38th Street Bridge
  • Superblock
  • 40th and Walnut
  • the former AEPi house location (THIS was the reason it was knocked down) (you've got to see this!)
  • (Because my time on campus was limited, I couldn't get everything.  So next time, I promise to get the new Bookstore, the Quad and Houston Hall!)
From post #1 to the coming months of stories I already have banked, a sincere thank you to all the current (and soon-to-be) Penn alumni for sharing your memories, enthusiasm and stories of success with me and all your fellow Quakers.  From this site, many memories have been relived, new connections made and job interviews (and jobs!) attained!  But don't listen to me, read these testimonials below....

DT Testimonials...+/-

"Just wanted to send a note to say thanks for your continued work w/ Dueling Tampons. it's one of the various e-news blasts I read most days. I really liked the one about '3 generations at Penn'."

-Jody Girgenti (C'98)

"As an outsider to the entertainment industry and to LA, DuelingTampons.com gave me an excellent jumping-off point to start my job search. It enabled me to learn about Penn alums in the entertainment industry and conduct necessary preliminary research. -Steve Gottlieb (C'04)

"I love what you are doing for Penn with this website. Keep it up!"

-Adam El Sehamy (C'09)

Last week a Penn alum randomly emailed me and told me he shared my DT site with one of his friends who graduated in 1995. His friend emailed him back with the following ...and I couldn't have asked for a more meaningful quote:

"I got all misty-eyed looking at the Dueling Tampons site. I mean it gave me sense memory of Penn... of the Walk when it was cold, or being in McNeill with Abiel, or being in German class, or taking 20 extra minutes to get to class because of the crowded Walk, or people that sat in my classes that are now really famous or important... just a great site"
-Chris Hartwell, C'95

And then, this past weekend, Joan, another Penn alum, IMed me on facebook with the following:

"Just want to thank you for all you are doing re: DT. You've reenergized my feelings toward Penn and now I have a son who plans on applying to Penn"
-Joan
As I approach year 2 with DT, please continue to let me know about your stories and what new and exciting features you would like me to promote!  Thank you!

Check out this FANTASTIC video put out by some Penn dental students which is packed with action and special effects. It's like Star Wars meets The Matrix, maybe meets The Power Rangers.

Look out for the Dueling Tampons in the background and (for those of you who haven't been back to campus in a while) what the refurbished high rises are looking like these days!

UPennRecently Jason James (C'95, AEPi) found my site and when he heard the name of it, it reminded him of a very "R" rated memory involving him and some friends...

"My fondest memory of Dueling Tampons: getting absolutely wasted with Matt Weinbach and two chicks whose name I cannot (or will not) recall ...removing all our clothes except our shoes and socks on the third floor of the fraternity house (all four of us)... marching out of the house, across the street, streaking through Penn campus at 1 am, and climbing the actual dueling tampons butt naked (based on this video, this is no easy task!) ...and then appearing in 34th Street in photo form (apparently taken by someone living in the Towers). "

There seems to be lots of voyeurs in the towers through the ages. Remember this recent video featuring the Midnight Dancers of Harrison College House?

Do any of you have any fun memories involving campus structures?
  • The Dueling Tampons?
  • The Button?
  • Ben on the Bench (although we've covered Ben on the Bench "pee"-related memories here)?
  • Other structures?

UPenn and Dueling Tampons

As part of my Talented Undergrad Showcase Week: featuring filmmaker Brian Canavan (C'10), I posted a video about a film editor who gets a little too deep into his work and then a video about a not-so-typical job interview.

After the jump I present a personal favorite of mine from Brian of Brian Canavan flipping for the Dueling Tampons.

Literally.

...So what's the story behind our namesake, anyway?

Since that's what this site is called, I figured I'd contact University Archives to get more of the details.

Jacqueline Jacovini, the Curator at Penn's archives gave me the skinny...

Beyond the fact that they're "four elements" made of rolled sheets of milled steel whose overall dimensions are 45' x 69' x 26'... the "Covenant" (real name) was something of controversy when it was built on Penn's campus in 1975.

Click to check out more details about why this "obnoxiously spastic" (quote from a 1974 undergrad) structure was built in the first place.

Now you (and I) know.

Who am I?

My name is  M a t t R o s l e r  and I graduated from Penn in '96, moved out to Los Angeles and immediately got involved in the Penn Club and in 2004 won Penn's first Young Alumni Award of Merit.  From that point on, I have always enjoyed connecting alumni....First with Pennfest, the emerging film and music festival and now with this site. ...Having been an actor and an aspiring TV writer myself, I have seen the need to connect our creative community.

Over the past 10+ years, I have also been a web producer. I currently work for an internet company and have produced websites including The Apprentice sites on Yahoo!, and various film and tv sites, contests and interactive banners for Disney, Fox, Warner Brothers, CBS, NBC and others.

What is this site?

After running our 6th Pennfest (night of emerging Penn talent in film and live music), I realized that instead of just celebrating our alumni in one night, we should celebrate one another every day. Afterall, over the years, I had been receiving daily emails from our participants about their latest films and music events. This got me thinking about creating this interactive, multimedia site.

So what is this site? Almost in its 5th year, this site is a hub for anyone related to Penn, who like me, (1) wants to know what's going on in the Penn world and (2) wants to be entertained in doing so. Well, I'm here to entertain you with all the latest aggregated news, videos, photos, and links brought to you from various Penn networks and resources across the world.

...After poking around on this site for a bit, you'll notice that a main focus of this site is showcasing and connecting the emerging talents of Penn undergrads and alumni in the arts (film, tv, theater, art, photography, etc..).

Why "Dueling Tampons"?
I went back and forth on this one, but at the end of the day, the "Dueling Tampons" is a slang term for the big red structures on superblock. This reference has been passed down to students on campus for decades. "Dueling Tampons" is something inherent to Penn, that most Penn alumni know. While it can be perceived as slightly irreverent (not my intentions), I hope it translates to memorable.
