As the final part of my Talented Undergrad Showcase Week: featuring filmmaker Brian Canavan (C'10), take a look at this creative "Goldfish" piece by Brian using stop action animation (credit also goes to Andrew Salute (C'10), David Loewy (C'10), Chris Arasin (C'10), Emily Barlow (C'10), and Amy Jones (C'10)). As you can see throughout this week, Brian seems to successfully experiment with different film genres.

Believe it or not there's another Penn related film festival outside of the Los Angeles based Pennfest film & music festival.

It's the Greater Philadelphia Student Film Festival (GPSFF) and this one is only for current Penn (and neighboring Philadelphia college) students and alumni one year out.

You hear that undergrad filmmakers I posted about here?

Now in its 3rd year and co-run by Penn undergrads, GPSFF seeks t o forge lasting connections between the city and its most talented filmmakers as an investment in Philadelphia's film industry. This festival provides an outlet for Philadelphia students to screen their films in front of a city-wide audience of their peers.

“The GPSFF team has built an extensive network of student liaisons from the various schools that will allow the Festival to grow beyond the walls of UPenn, where it originally started.” said Yanik Ruiz-Ramón (C’10), Co-Executive Director of the Festival’s board. “With the success of last year’s festival, we are anticipating tremendous growth for this year’s event, with more submissions from more schools, a more diverse attendance of students throughout the region, and greater support from both the city and promotional sponsors,” said Jason Gurwin (W’08), Co-Executive Director, a founding member of the festival board.
GPSFF will be accepting submissions from current Penn students and alumni within one year of graduation through Friday February 1st, WITH NO SUBMISSION FEE! (Late submissions may be sent in by February 15th but require a $10 late fee.)

Finalists will have their films screened in front of hundreds of adoring fans at the GPSFF Awards Ceremony on March 28 and the winning films will be screened in the Philadelphia Film Festival in April in Levitt Auditorium at 401 S. Broad Street, which seats up to 600 people.

Any questions, email GPSFF@GPSFF.com.

upenn dorm room
A few weeks ago I started a "Tuesday Tips" weekly series and now starting today, I will be starting a weekly "Now and Then Thursdays" series highlighting videos and photos from my time on campus with the current campus.

To start this series off, back in September 2007, through facebook photo postings, I found the student who is currently living in the room I lived in my freshman year in the lower Quad!

I know what you're asking... "how do you know it's the same room?"

Besides the fact that I ultimately asked the girl via facebook, I first identified the photos because my room was a unique top floor corner room in a dead end hallway (--in a building without an elevator! Yes, I had a hell of a time going up and down those stairs and I had killer calf muscles by the end of the year. ...Don't even get me started on move-in and move-out!)

Click below to see the shocking side-by-side photo comparisons of my 1992 room photos vs. the current day room photos!

Photo 2: Room
Photo 3: Quad View
Photo 4: Hallway

Alumni, have any good stories related to your dorm room? Comment below!

UPenn and Dueling Tampons

As part of my Talented Undergrad Showcase Week: featuring filmmaker Brian Canavan (C'10), I posted a video about a film editor who gets a little too deep into his work and then a video about a not-so-typical job interview.

After the jump I present a personal favorite of mine from Brian of Brian Canavan flipping for the Dueling Tampons.

Literally.

Our undergrads and alumni are not only mentally fit, but in the case of Collete DeBenedetto (C'08), physically fit as well.

Look out for Collette who is featured in the February 08' issue of the women's fitness magazine, Oxygen (on newsstands now!) She is in the "Tomorrow's Cover Girls" section looking hot!

Click here to check out Collette!

From the looks of it, this proactive undergrad has her act together not only when it comes to fitness, but when it comes to a career in entertainment. According to her facebook profile, I see that she has interned at both Scott Rudin Productions and at VH1 (both in NY). Something tells me she'll be one to look out for...

Two weeks ago I talked about a great internship Penn was offering undergrads. This week, I want to share the best internship out there which actually brought me out to Los Angeles when I was a Junior at Penn.

This #1 competitive internship pays $4000 for the summer and gets you connected to the right players in Hollywood quickly...

While musician Gabriel Mann (C'95, Off the Beat) has shared the stage with Alanis Morissette and Jamie Cullum, nothing compares to Gabe's latest collaboration.

Click here to find out with whom! (this is classic!)

I just got my hands on a home video of music sensation Gabriel Mann. One of his hit songs "Eight Feet Tall", meant to be a solo is being sung as a duet. But the big surprise is how small the singer is upstaging him ...even calls him daddy.

Click here to check it out!

Check out Gabe's "Eight Feet Tall" solo from his CD release party this past summer.
