Despite racial tension in the early 1970s, Michael Abramson (W'70) shot photos in the Chicago Southside nightclub scene which fueled his career as a successful photographer for numerous national and foreign magazines including Time, Newsweek, BusinessWeek, Forbes and Sports Illustrated.
Michael has shot some prestigious subjects including former presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Jordan. Other photos subjects included workers in a recycling plant and wild mustangs in South Dakota.
His story has recently been told in the Chicago Tribune. (Read the article below!)

Digg "It was me and another one of my friends Laura Kelly. We stopped in front of the upper quad gate and there he is. He was wearing a green shirt and carrying a green purse. (?) After that we walked around to the other side of the quad...in front of Leidy Labs. I was trying to sneak in somehow and a member of the crew saw me. We talked with her for a while and she told us that she saw him do Yoga in the morning. She also said that he's really short in person, but seems nice. We eventually go back to the upper quad gate where we just sit and wait. In that time there were several shots of students with luggage. It looked like they were filming move-in. The crew also brought him a cake for his birthday. After about an hour, he comes out. Surrounded by guards he blazes past us, giving us time for only one picture. As he gets into the car my friend yells, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" He responds, "Thank You." He's really short and tan. His hair looked like it had been dyed."Max's story reminds me of when I was busted in front of Tom Hanks when the film Philadelphia was shot at Penn. Read more here!

I was just checking Google's new "Street View" option for Penn's Spruce Street and was dismayed to see this!
Do you see the empty lot next to Allegros pizza? (Click on the image above to get a better view.)
That lot used to be where (my fraternity) AEPi (3940 Spruce Street) once resided.
Apparently, a cracked water pipe caused so much destruction that the whole house had to be knocked down! I hear that the fraternity is now on Walnut Street (near 40th). (current AEPi guys, feel free to comment below)
To take a brief trip down memory lane, check out my 1993 pictures below of the AEPi house during our annual "Hollywood" party. Every year we'd plaster the quad with flyers, rent lights out front and canvas the entire first floor of the house with B-rated movie posters we'd get from that video place on Locust (whose name I'm forgetting). You'll also note the "Hollywood" marquee and ticket booth.
Nothing like "themed" fraternity parties.

The campus really empties out during winter break...
(For those who haven't been back in a while, you'll notice newly laid bricks on Locust Walk and lights and some sort of heightened fence on the 38th Street bridge)

Although Penn is practically in winter, I found this great photo on Flickr that was taken a few weeks ago which pretty much sums up Fall at Penn. Looking at this photo I remember it was these sorts of days when the weather was about to turn very cold.
With all those leaves, how many more people do you think have tripped over those crooked bricks on Locust?

Just because I went to only a few Penn basketball games during college due to my involvement in Mask and Wig, that didn't mean I wasn't interested in Penn Basketball.
And just because I don't necessarily follow any sort of basketball doesn't mean I'm not interested in Penn basketball.
I do love the spirit when Penn alumni come together and cheer on Penn. And now there's a whole new season that's been announced. A season when Penn Basketball will be on national TV several times this season.
Per Pennathletics.com, “Penn will play on the ESPN family of networks four times during the course of the season, highlighted by its national telecast on ESPN2 when North Carolina comes to The Palestra on Tuesday, Dec. 4. In addition, the Quakers’ Big 5 game at Villanova (Dec. 1) will air on ESPN360; their Ivy game at home with Yale (Feb. 16) will air live on ESPN Classic; and their season-ending contest at Princeton (March 11) will be televised on ESPNU.
As part of the Ivy League’s television package with the YES Network, Penn’s contest at Yale (Feb. 29) will air live to a nationwide audience.”
Thanks for the tip from Kiera Reilly C'93!

"Just wanted to send a note to say thanks for your continued work w/ Dueling Tampons. it's one of the various e-news blasts I read most days. I really liked the one about '3 generations at Penn'."
-Jody Girgenti (C'98)
"As an outsider to the entertainment industry and to LA, DuelingTampons.com gave me an excellent jumping-off point to start my job search. It enabled me to learn about Penn alums in the entertainment industry and conduct necessary preliminary research. From there I was able to reach out to our incredible alumni network, schedule introductory meetings and phone calls, eventually land an interview, and finally secure an internship at a top Hollywood studio."

I mean it gave me sense memory of Penn... of the Walk when it was cold, or being in McNeill with Abiel, or being in German class, or taking 20 extra minutes to get to class because of seeing everyone I knew on Locust Walk, or people that sat in my classes that are now really famous or important... just a great site"
