Check out Gyro, a clever comedic short film from Kevin Conley (C'12) about a Penn student who wakes up one Saturday morning to search for his favorite food: gyros.   No matter when you graduated, one thing that rings true in this video is Kevin's humorous depiction of Locust Walk!  Watch the video above to see what I mean!

University of PennsylvaniaPer Kevin's description, this takes place in the 1920's commons on a Saturday! Apparently since I've graduated, dining halls are now open on Saturdays!. I would have loved that when I was at Penn! Instead the default for me was Houston Hall's Skolnik Bagels and My Favorite Muffin (I loved me the amaretto raspberry muffin!).

This whole quest for food reminds me of the film I did in 1996 about a man who stops at nothing for love ...and his favorite food. See what I mean by watching below.

I enjoyed this class project video that Raphael Langenscheidt (C'10) created which sums up the lifeblood of Penn: Locust Walk.

Per Raphael,
"The idea I had for my movie came to me when I was walking down Locust Walk on a busy day between classes. Whenever you try to get from one class to the next, it seems that Locust is bustling with people, and there is almost no space to walk. However, if you walk down Locust at a time where no class gets out, or on weekends even more so, there is almost nobody there. What I aim to do in my movie is to emphasize how in approximately 30 minutes, Locust walk changes from a beautiful, almost ancient walkway into a scene which is full of life, full of emotion and full of university life, and then back after everyone disappears into the buildings. I think this is a good project because everyone at Penn knows that it takes about 30 minutes for people to start coming out of classes until everyone is back in their classes, therefore we all know what this movie is portraying."
Enjoy!

UPennWhile Fielding Edlow (C'95) is primarily a playwright, she recently collaborated on her first short The Long Nap (see above) with her director Adrian Fulle, in the writer's group, Safehouse, in Santa Monica.  The short is about "a woman who wakes up from a 12 year relationship nap."  Look out for Penn alum Jessie Schneiderman (C'05) performing in the film.

Tomorrow night (9/16) at 9pm, her short one-act, "Sex and Tinsel in Denver", will be included with four other writers tomorrow 12/16 at 9pm, in the off-Broadway Naked Angels Reading Series in NYC.
Tuesdays at Nine
National Comedy Theater
347 West 36th Street
between 8th and 9th Avenue
Hosted by T@9 NY's creative directors Stephanie Cannon and Joe Danisi.
Also, Fielding's full-length play, "Admissions" is being developed by Naked Angels in NYC as well. "Admissions" is about a family teetering on the brink when an inappropriate father and a self-obsessed mother accompany their disaffected daughter, sitting on the lid of Pandora's box, on a Vassar College campus tour.

Besides writing, Fielding also performs improv every Friday night at Ultimate Improv in Westwood at 9pm with her group, "The Board".  More at Ultimateimprov.com.

Back in September, I reported that there was a "flash mob" on Locust Walk which took the form of one huge Pillow fight. (check out the videos here)

...Then in November there was another flash mob where Freshmen froze on Locust walk for 5 minutes (check out the videos here)!

Now in the midst of studying for finals, this past week, there was another flash mob this time in the form of a "Silent Dance Party" at Fisher Fine Arts Library.  If you remember ever studying in Fisher Fine Arts, you'll remember that there is no talking allowed.  On that note, watch the video above...and see how the students maintain that rule while flash mobbing! It's very funny!

...On a side note, the interesting part of this video is that this is where I stood back in 1992 when I was busted in front of Tom Hanks when the film Philadelphia came to Penn. Read more about what happened that night here!

Aaron Karo - Just Go Talk to Her
In addition to his books, touring the country with his act, a great appearance on "The Craig Ferguson Show", his new website: Ruminations.com, Aaron Karo (W'01, Pennfest 2006) just launched a new CD "Just Go Talk to Her".

Per Aaron's press relase,
"Recorded live in Boston at the Comedy Connection in Faneuil Hall, “Just Go Talk To Her” begins in a peculiar fashion - New York native Aaron Karo professes his love for the Yankees and Giants until the rabid Boston crowd showers him with boos. Those boos quickly turn to raucous cheers as Karo’s trademark brand of storytelling - fast-paced personal anecdotes about drinking, dating, and debauchery - win over even the most hardened Red Sox fans. Whether he’s divulging the secrets that all guys keep from their girlfriends or picking apart the foibles of married couples, Karo excels at taking universal experiences and turning them on their head."
Listen to his track below entitled "Chicks Love Sweatpants". You'll laugh your ass off!

Get Aaron Karo's "Just Go Talk to Her" CD (it just hit itunes comedy top 20!)

UPenn, University of Pennsylvania
Last week, I posted video of TV writer (and Penn in Pictures') host Lew Schneider (C'83), "ER" Medical consultant, Zach Lutsky (C'97), and "Brothers and Sisters" TV Writer Sherri Cooper Landsman (C'94) talking about their beginnings in Hollywood.

Today, I continue my Penn in Pictures series with great video of Jason Resnick (C'94), Senior Vice President and General Manager of Worldwide Acquisitions for the Universal Pictures Group.

In this position, Resnick oversees motion picture acquisitions to support Universal's global distribution network, which encompasses Universal Pictures, Focus Features and Rogue Pictures. Upcoming releases include Drag Me to Hell, a new horror film from director Sam Raimi and This Side of the Truth, the directorial debut of acclaimed British comedy star Ricky Gervais. Resnick also oversees Universal's local language productions in Latin America and Asia. Recent films include Jose Padilha's Brazilian hit, Elite Squad, and Korean director Park Chan-wook's latest work, Thirst.

In the videos below, Jason talks about:
  • What he did at Penn as an English major
  • The not-so-encouraging advice he received from Penn’s Career Planning
  • His moves from Penn to Paris and then to NY where he began working at Miramax
  • His move to LA where he first worked for a manager/producer
  • What he has done in “acquisitions” over the past 10 years within Universal and what he’s doing there now as Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, including the types of independent international films he’s purchasing

A special thanks to editor David Chalfin (C'96), a fantastic editor living in Los Angeles who recorded and edited all the Penn in Pictures videos. Check out his reel here!
