UPenn and Rob Forman and Hollywood writer

Last time we checked in with aspiring LA TV writer Rob Forman (W'06), he taught us all about "spec scripts" and what you do with them once you're done in order to pursue a Hollywood career.

After his summer hiatus, Rob has now returned back to work as a writers assistant on "Army Wives" and is sharing some great tips for anyone thinking about writing a TV script.

After the jump,
  • learn what writing accomplishment Rob achieved this summer
  • what his job as writer's assistant is on "Army Wives" (minute 2:45)
  • why his wrist hurts
  • read Rob's original pilot spec and act 2 from his "Glee" spec
  • listen to Rob's words of wisdom about "structure" and how to approach specs using colorful notecards.

UPenn and TV Writer and Rob Foreman and Glee and Heroes

A couple of weeks ago we met aspiring LA TV writer Rob Forman (W'06) and he told us about his journey from Penn to LA, the agency he first worked at, and the TV shows on which he's been a writer's assistant.

In today's installment, Rob talks to us about the steps he's taking from being an aspiring TV writer to a "paid" writer. (Note the Rob's masterful use of "air quotes" throughout the video : ) )

After the jump, listen to Rob talk about:
  • "spec scripts" and which TV shows he has written spec scripts for
  • what to do once you have finished a spec script
  • what has "fallen out of fashion" in terms of writing TV scripts
  • which popular writing competitions he has submitted to ...which you should as well! (and which one he was a finalist in!)
  • what he's working on now
Also, be sure to check out the embedded spec scripts Rob has provided us to read and learn from!

Rob Forman and Hollywood writer and UPenn

As we approach year 5 of DT, I continues to expand our arsenal of entertaining "insider-tip"-filled vlogs from Penn undergrads and alumni as they pursue the ups and downs of their entertainment career journeys:
Rob Forman and Hollywood writer and UPennToday, we now add Rob, another Penn personality to our mix of vloggers.

Rob Forman (W'06) has been out here in LA for the past 5 years pursuing television writing, and is beyond just starting out in the business.

After the jump, watch Rob as he talks about his journey from Penn to LA, the agency he first worked at, and the TV shows on which he's been a writer's assistant.

I've known Rob for a while now and he remains passionate about TV and passionate about writing.  And as we know, passion is a common thread of many of our successful alumni.

UPenn and Tomorrow We Disappear and Jim Goldblum and Adam Weber
Adam and Jim
A couple years ago I did a story on Jim Goldblum (C'07, 34th Street)'s virtual Katrina Yearbook which CNN said, of all the press coverage and all the documentaries, it was "one of the best of the best."

Jim has been working on a new compelling project with a fellow film editor Penn classmate, Adam Weber (C'06). They've teamed up to produce the feature documentary and interactive narrative, "Tomorrow We Disappear".

The project chronicles the Kathputli Colony, a tinsel slum that's been home to Delhi's acrobats, puppeteers, and magicians since the 1970s. Last year the government issued relocation permits to the colony residents; the slum is to be bulldozed, cleared for development.  Jim and Adam will capture the last remains of this culture born out of folk art and molded by poverty.

After the jump, see what great footage they've captured so far.
