UPenn and Classless and UTV and Kelly Diamond

I've seen my fair share of student films over the years and am happy to report that these films have now also evolved into the first ever TV sitcom created by current Penn students.

UPenn and Classless and UTV and Kelly DiamondIn the first episode of "Classless", Steve, a student who has been shunned by the school newspaper goes on a mission to create a second student newspaper.  In doing so it looks likehe'll be getting second-rate journalists as well.  Laughter of course ensues.

So here's the deal.

This show is well written, well cast and well edited (in a sort of a similar manner as "The Office").  There's some great dialogue and characters (check out the "business card guy") and the show moves rather quickly.

After the jump enjoy the first episode of "Classless"!

Hollywood alumni.. set up a meeting with this young filmmaker, because he's going places...

Kevin McMullin (C'09, in picture below in tanktop) is another story of talent combined with motivation and perseverance with all the potential of lots of Hollywood success.  With his Penn award winning script and some great short films under his belt, Kevin decided to graduate Penn a year early to pursue his dreams.

UPenn and Films
(l to r: Kevin McMullin (C'09), lead actor John Blakeslee, and cinematographer Sean Emer)

Thanks to the digital revolution and through lots of favors, Kevin has been able to make his feature film Exit 117 for less than $850. The film is an ensemble comedy-drama in the spirit of Rob Reiner’s “Stand By Me” and Richard Linklater’s “Slacker” about a group of recent high school graduates coming to terms with where they are and where they’re going in their lives.

...If you forgot, early last year, Kevin's short film "The Boy and The Star" was my #3 pick in in my series: Top Penn Videos that will give you the chills.  As you'll see in Kevin's trailer above, this film also has a very special artistic feel that will be sure to move you!

How did Kevin get his start and what's his plan now?

Per Kevin,
"I have been making short films since I was a 12 years old with friends and after high school I chose Penn over film school to get a broader liberal arts education. While I was there I won first place at the Greater Philadelphia Student Film Festival two years in a row, which funneled my shorts into the international Philadelphia Film Festival.

I decided to condense my time at Penn into three years to pursue filmmaking and put money toward this endeavor. I wrote the screenplay for this feature in my Intro to Screenwriting Class with Kathy Van Cleve and kept rewriting over the next year. It won the 2009 Flesch Screenwriting Award at Penn. With this prize money and some savings I shot “Exit 117” for less than $850 on lots of borrowed equipment and natural sunlight.

This is another example of Penn undergrads working together. Kevin teamed up with friends:
  • Rodrigo Suarez (C, ENG’10) and Blake West (C’09) who contribute music to the soundtrack
  • Andrew Stern (W’10) who acts as the Radio DJ’s voice over
  • Jessica Brown (Grad Education ’09) who has been the pre-production manager and a production assistant
  • and Jon-Marc Balint (C'10) who has a supporting role in the film and is associate producer.
Hollywood Penn alumni, feel free to get in touch with Kevin here: kevinjamesmcmullin@gmail.com

What happens when 4 Penn alumni come together to raise money for a good cause? Ask (l to r in pic in left) David Fraga (C'07, Mask and Wig, Sphinx Senior Society, Performing Arts Council), Allam Taj, (Law '09), Sam Adelsberg (C'10), and Andrew Dudum (C'11).

In February, these 4 created LendforPeace.org, a non-profit microfinance platform focused on the Middle East and was recently featured on Fox Business (see interview clip above featuring David Fraga).

LendforPeace.org was founded by these four Penn students (two Jews and two Palestinians) on the premise that grassroots economic development through microfinance may help increase stability in the Middle East. While the founders disagree about a lot of things, it is hard to disagree about a mission of poverty alleviation and job creation.

Supported by such institutions as the Clinton Global Initiative and Ashoka (the largest association of social entrepreneurs in the world), Lendforpeace.org was launched on February 5th at an event on Penn's campus.

UPenn

Matt Capeletti (W'12)Diana Kattan (W'12) are about to present students around the world with a way to get help with their studies ..for free.

But they need your help.

Matt and Diana are semifinalists with the Dell Social Innovation Competition and are seeking support for their website http://www.tutorchatlive.org.

Per Matt and Diana,
"As high school students, we realized the struggle that many face in getting help and understanding material. The use of a tutor can be a very valuable resource but they are often very expensive and many therefore cannot afford one. We decided to create a solution to this social problem by creating TutorChatLive.org, an easily accessible FREE online tutoring resource where any student around the world can log on and receive free tutoring through our live chat software."
Anyone can register and vote to support Matt and Diana's idea HERE.

Matt explains that at present, they do not have tutors available on their site because they are working on updating it and securing necessary funding to properly launch the project. Their main focus now is spreading the word about supporting their project with the Dell Social Innovation Competition.

Regardless of winning, they plan on launching the site in September 2009.

OK GoClasses at Penn are over and what better way to celebrate than to dance!

Recently some Penn students performed a nicely choreographed dance to OK Go (A Million Ways).

OK GoWatch Penn students get their groove on

I couldn't help but be reminded of Trish Sie's (C'94) hugely popular choreographed video to OK Go's Here We Go Again. ...Yes, if you didn't know, this viral video was choreographed, directed and produced by a Penn alum and was featured in Los Angeles' Pennfest 2007.

threesome
As you may recall from my previous post, filmmaker Stephen Robert Morse (C'07, DP /34th Street) got funding from Wharton to create a political documentary.

From his Spring '07 Cinema Production course, Stephen has now submitted an entirely different type of film he wants to show us. ...A comedy that deals with "the morning after", revenge, STDs and all sorts of goodness. Look out for the use of Smokes as a location in the film. And try not to cringe when you see how the lead character uses Listerine to help his "situation" out.

Watch The Morning After
Part 1
Part 2

Stephen is now pursuing a Master's in Scriptwriting at the University of East Anglia and working at Blake Friedmann Agency in London, and plans to move out to LA in May '08 to find a job in the entertainment business.

The Morning After stars:
Marc Friedman (C'07), Lia Zneimer (C'09), Lizzie Frasco (C'08), Alex Weinstein (C'07), Leah Feder (C'07), Tracy Webber (C'07), Caitlin Russell (C'07), The Spring '07 TEP pledge class, Eric Borowsky (C'07), Tom Campana (C'07), Alex Solether (C'08), Andrea Kohn (C'09)

So far, my 3 "Penn" related facebook widget picks (what is a widget?) have centered around Penn basketball, phone books, ticketing and now today, it's all about video.

Click here to see my #2 pick.

#2) "myTV" Widget
Penn Entrepreneurs Nat Turner (W'08), Zach Weinberg (C'08), Scott Becker (C'09) and Michael Provenzano ('08) have built a slick application called "myTV" for Facebook which allows users to search YouTube and save videos to a personal playlist.

The talented founders of Invite Media, Inc. have recently launched their tech start-up which focuses on online video optimization and monetization. Backed by two Wharton statisticians, the myTV application is a launching point for the creation of a video discovery and recommendation engine based on behavioral targeting.

Stay tuned because Invite Media also struck a deal with a major video publisher that will enable them to largely distribute their content recommendation engine to over 40 million users. With personal recommendations already available for the music realm thanks to discovery services like Pandora Radio, the inclusion of video content into the discovery engine will greatly expand the online video industry and possibly lead to better ad monetization.

Click here to add the application to your facebook profile!
