From documentaries about oil spills to prison baseball teams, filmmaker Loren Mendell (C'95, Friars) has quite a variety of films under his belt.
This week, Loren not only debuts another documentary, but this one's featured on Tuesday & Wednesday at Slamdance!
Click here to check out what new documentary genre Loren has chosen!
Loren's latest film Adjust Your Color: The Truth of Petey Greene tells the unlikely story of America's first shock jock Petey Greene and features Howard Stern, Marion Barry, Sugar Ray Leonard and James Brown among others.
Per Loren, "America’s original shock-jock, Petey Greene, overcame poverty, drug addiction and prison-time to “tell it like it is,” shocking and entertaining everyone from the ghetto to the White House. During an era of civil unrest in our nation’s capital, Petey used taboo words and ideas, forcing people to confront their own prejudices on his raw, uncensored TV and radio shows. His explosive language and brash style unsettled the establishment as Petey battled both the system and his own demons on the journey to becoming a leading activist during some of our country’s most turbulent years. Don Cheadle, who portrayed Petey in the feature Talk To Me, narrates this documentary featuring a face-off between Petey and an up and coming deejay named Howard Stern."
"This documentary presents rarely seen footage of Petey Greene. It’s a must for anyone who wants to know what made Petey Greene such an incredibly charismatic person, or whomever wants to know where Howard Stern got his gusto from.”

Last week I posted about "One Night Stand", the improv musical group that Jonah Platt (C'08, Off the Beat) started seven years ago.
With video camera in hand, I ventured down to see his show last Saturday night with Kiera Reilly (C'93) and we both had a fantastic time!
Jonah came out at the beginning of the show and asked the audience for a bunch of words which they then weaved into a FULL hour's musical performance! A full hour! With an accompanying pianist and an actual story arc! And all of this improv! They were making up songs and lyrics on the spot!
The words that were muttered from the audience from the show I saw included "Mental Hospital", "Geri Curls" and "Matzah Ball Soup". It was exciting sitting in the audience watching this talented troupe work together and weave an entertaining story on the fly before our very eyes. The story which resulted was about a woman admitted to a mental hospital and forced to take pills all day long.

(Jonah is the guy swinging his arms in the video)
The protagonist's one true love then gives up his transsexual(!) lover and goes after her. ...This resulted in a very funny scene in which Jonah and 2 fellow performers sang a cleverly improvised song comparing sexual preference to having both the lemonade and ice tea in an Arnold Palmer drink.

While my #4 and #3 picks for my "Penn videos that will give you the chills" have been beautifully made films, yesterday I introduced a powerful spoken word video as my #2 pick.
The more I experience these Spoken Word performances from our Penn community, the more I really like this genre.
...Which brings me to #1 pick today from an award winning undergrad with tons of passion and an interesting background story to match.
Click here to check out my #1 pick!Raw truth and expression is what you will find in Alysia Harris' (C'10, The Excelano Project) April 2007 Spoken Word College Nationals winning performance of "What's in a Soldier".
Before you watch it, note Alysia's story behind her spoken words:"I wrote that poem because my father was in the army for 22 years and when he was sick he stayed on the amputee floor at Walter Reed Army Hospital. And it was really life changing to see people who were my age 18, 19, who were literally half the people they were before they left for iraq, no legs, no arms, disfigured for life, but all still optimistic and smiling. These men are my age and while I'm off in a classroom pouring over Russian literature these men are out there squaring off with death. And it just made me think. People are so quick to criticize the army and those who serve, but they have no idea about what they are willing to sacrifice."
