UPenn and recyle and green and Brian YanishOver the past few years, DT has followed the great journey Brian Yanish (C'95, Mask and Wig) has been taking with his his Scrap Kins childrens property.

What started out as a few sketches from Brian's childhood has turned into a NYC-based Creativity program for kids based on the adventures of a group of monsters that live in a recycling center and build their world out of the things we throw away.

For you parents and educators out there, after the jump find out about Brian's fantastic new book that will keep your children occupied for hours.

...And see how actress Brooke Shields got involved with The Scrapkins!

UPenn and recycle and green and Scrap Kins Build-it BookWhat can you make from all that junk you throw away? In Brian's The Scrap Kins Build-It Book, Volume 1, the Scrap Kins, a team of recycling monsters give step by step instructions to turn toilet paper tubes and milk cartons into pirate ships, bird feeders and more!  DIY, build-able, green, family fun. (free download of one of his project worksheets below!)

Created in 2006 by Yanish, The Scrap Kins mission is to encourage creativity and resourcefulness through stories and recycled art projects. The Scrap Kins are endorsed by Scholastic After-school as an Instructor Resource. Brian has also developed programs and projects for Clif Bar &Company, The Wildlife Conservation Society, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Free Arts and Children's Day NYC.

Recently, Brian participated in the KidsFest fundraiser for FreeArts, a NYC arts organization that creates art programs for underpriviliged kids. In the photo below, Brooke Shields peeks out of a Scrap Kins Gingerbread playhouse Brian made from cardboard and cereal boxes that kids then decorated.
