Writer Joe Port (C’97, DP Cartoonist) hopes someone buys into his Five Year Plan.

Specifically the ABC network.

A month ago, Joe shot a pilot for ABC (produced by NBC) called Five Year Plan, that he and his writing partner Joe Wiseman created and exec produced together. It stars Steve Howey, Will Sasso, Brooke D'orsay, Lee Thompson Young, Joy Osmanski and Steve Rosen.

Per Joe,

“The basic idea is we introduce this young group of people, we learn what their respective five year plans are, and then we watch them as they try to make those dreams come true. The pilot was directed by Gail Mancuso. We're all done editing itnow and have gotten a lot of good feedback so far (my mother Phyllis Port (C'60) claims, "It's a winner!"). We should know pretty soon whether or not it will be picked up to series.”

Before this, Joe worked on The Office, Just Shoot Me and per Joe, “many shows that you've never heard of.”

Joe’s not the only Hollywood Penn writer in his family. His brother Moses Port (C’91) and writing partner David Guarascio (C'91) executive produced last year's CW show Aliens in America and are currently developing projects for Sony.

Here’s another alum with not your typical profession whose talents have appeared in TV and film!

Steve Herbst (C’67, Glee Club) has these impressive credits under his belt:

• An International Grand Champion Whistler (2002)
• The only man ever named International Whistling Entertainer Of The Year 3X (2003, 2004, 2005)
• A member of the International Whistlers Hall of Fame (inducted in 2007). Note Bing Crosby is also a member.

Steve tells me that while at Penn, he was a 4-year member and Bass Section leader of the Glee Club and a frequent baritone soloist.  He was also a "closet whistler" rehearsing Motown as well as Beethoven, Mozart, Lizst selections in his dorm rooms in Provost and Morgan towers.

Steve shares a fond memory he had with the late Bruce Montgomery:

"Bruce Montgomery had the Glee Club do two numbers which called for flutes or recorders but where he whistled those parts personally. One night, he came up dry and couldn't get his whistle going. After that concert, I told him, "I could do that for you." And he handed the whistling over to me. From then on, I did all the whistling. On one special occasion, I got to whistle with the Glee Club for Japanese Emperor Hirohito's brother, Prince Mikassa and his princess at the William S. Payley House on the Mainline. So my public concert whistling career started at Penn."

This month Steve will be traveling to Tokyo and Osaka to compete in this year's International Whistling Convention and Competition plus 3 concerts.

Steve's Other Accomplishments ...+/-

• Whistling concerts on the Penn Campus, at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in nightclubs and theaters from coast-to-coast including Birdland, The Cotton Club, and the Irridium Jazz Club here in New York City
• Being featured in and narrated an award-winning feature-length documentary on whistling -- "Pucker-Up -- The Fine Art of Whistling,"

• Appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Morning Show plus many other TV and radio stations, newspapers, and magazines around the world.

• TV appearances including commercials and his whistling has been used by the "Malcolm In The Middle" sitcom

Funny man DJ Lubel (C’05) seems to juggle a whole bunch of creative jobs here in Los Angeles.

• His day job is working as an Associate Producer on the show fellow Penn alum Roy Bank (C’94) created, Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?.
• He just finished working as an Associate Producer at "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List" among other jobs.
• When he’s not writing scripts, he performs original comedic songs all around Los Angeles.
• He’s had shows at the Whiskey A GO GO, The Pig N the Whistle, El Cid, Cabana Club etc.

In addition, DJ has created a whole bunch of funny viral videos, but his “I Miss Moranis” one in particular has caught the attention of such sites as IMDB, Funnyordie and Spiketv. Last spring, the attention of this video had students at Lindenwood University in St. Charles Missouri fly DJ out to perform at their annual spring fling event!

Right now DJ is working with other fellow Penn alumni including Jake Avnet (C’05), Conor Welch (C’05) and Jason Ziven (W’05) in developing future projects.

For our July contest, Kyle Schroeder (W'00), was kind enough to donate a gift basket of 3 tubes of his new Cremo (Shaving) Cream with fogless mirrors.

...And because he registered for my newsletter, Tom Heller (C'95) was randomly selected as the winner of our July Contest!  Congratulations, Tom!

More about Kyle's Cremo Shaving Cream here ...+/-

The Astonishingly Superior Shave Cream

* Dramatically reduces cuts, nicks, scrapes and razor irritation.
* Gives you the closest, most comfortable. longest lasting shave.
* Leaves your skin astonishingly soft and smooth.

Try It Once to Believe it. Enjoy It For Life. It's Really That Good.

Most shave "creams" and "gels" are actually foam -- which is primarily air. Visualize a sharp blade scarping across your delicate skin with air as the main "lubricant." It tears your skin, creates little cuts and nicks that bleed, and leaves your skin looking and feeling rough.

Cremo has no air: It's an extremely rich cream (even more so than other similar/non-foam luxury shave creams). It contains unique, super-lubricating, highly-slippery molecules that have been compounded with powerful skin conditioners. Together, they make your blade glide smoothly over your skin astonishingly soft and smooth. I think you will find this is better than anything else you have ever used. Try it once to believe it. Enjoy it for life.

If you can't wait, here are some discounts to purchase Kyle's shaving cream at drugstore.com:

• New Customers: Receive $5 off $30 or $10 off $50 on your first non-prescription order! Offer ends 08.31.08.A great deal if you have never ordered from the website before. I think (but am not sure) that you can use it with the link above--definitely with the ones below. Drugstore.com carries everything from Frontline flea repellent for your pets to inflatable pool toys, so spending $50 is easy, plus you get free shipping and no tax (for those of us not in WA).
• Cremo Cream Shave Cream, with Free Fogless MirrorThis is a great promotion that we are running. Incredible value given that you can pay $20 for a fogless shower mirror in most stores.
• 20% off SALE for 6 oz Cremo Cream tube
