UPenn and Duc-Minh Nguyen

Earlier this week, I posted an article about 2 Penn filmmakers that need your vote in an innovative film contest.

Duc-Minh Nguyen (C'07, DP, MUSE, Dining Philosophers, VSA), another Penn alum with another great film just emailed in and he also needs your vote!

After the jump watch his beautiful film and vote!  Please "like" or "retweet" this article to help spread the word! (voting ends Oct. 23)

First about the contest: The "TenLegs Butterfly Effect Competition" encourages artists across mediums to submit artwork that best portrays their own interpretation of the Butterfly effect. The Butterfly Effect is our modern day parable to explain the interconnectedness of our 21st century world. A butterfly flaps its wings in Montevideo, starting a chain of events, culminating in a typhoon in Japan, or a cool summer breeze in New York. The simple or the ignored, the unseen acts or sparks of inspiration that shape and affect the world around us define the lives we lead. The winner of the competition based initially on the most viewer votes and later on the Judge's discretion gets $5,000 towards their next project.

That said, Duc-Minh's "Ten Thousand Others" film above tells the story of a runner whose life flashes before his eyes when a sudden heart attack cripples him. As memories engulf his consciousness, he realizes that the images he sees are not of his own life. Ten Thousand Others conveys the Butterfly Effect by showing that our lives, no matter how isolated they seem, are inexplicably intertwined with nature and the people around us.

To give you some background on Duc-Minh, he graduated from Penn in 2007 with a major in Digitial Media Design. After graduation he took a job with Goldman Sachs in the Technology Division working on trade reporting and data analytics software applications. He then slightly shifted gears:
"I had spent the prior summer working on animation technology software at Disney Feature Animation and wasn't sure I had found my niche. The cinema productions course I took senior year at Penn plus the craft of editing course I took at NYU SCPS 2 years into my GS job gave me some clarity. I left my fulltime job 3 years into it because I felt like I could make a larger impact and be better at doing post-production for films."
Currently, Duc-Minh isa freelance film/video editor and primarily does editing, minor visual effects compositing, color-grading, and videography for short projects. He also collaborates on film/video projects with graduates of Stanford, whom he worked with on this short, and NYU Tisch Film students. He also continues to work part-time remotely for a government technology contractor.
