His Documentary Pays Tribute to Millions

On this day of remembering the 6 million Jewish lives that were lost during the Holocaust, I want to bring to your attention Swimming in Auschwitz, the fantastic documentary from filmmaker Jon Kean (C'89, Mask and Wig, Friars).

Per Jon, "The interwoven stories of six women provide a glimpse into life, spirit and survival at the notorious concentration camp, Auschwitz."

From May 2 - May 9, Jon will be attending the weekend
screenings at the Beverly Hills Laemmle's Music Hall in the evenings to lead Q and A's (and the women in the film will try to attend select screenings as well).

Rumor has it that Transformers 2 will be shooting on Penn's campus. Could possibly make sense as the film will be produced by Wharton grad alum Lorenzo Di Bonaventura.

Anyone know anything about this? Comment below!

Now and Then Thursdays: Once Again She Called Them Seniors

UPenn Hey Day
UPennHey Day 2008 happened on Tuesday this week and once again, judging from some of the facebook photos I've seen, craziness ensued!

videosWatch President Gutmann proclaim the once class of 2009 "juniors" now "seniors"!

videosAnd in case you missed it, watch President Gutmann proclaim last year's junior's "seniors" (and now practically graduates!)

As you'll see in both of the videos above, it is hard for President Gutmann to get decorum. I'm sure this always was and always will be the case.

CNN Called His Online Katrina Yearbook One of The Best

A few weeks ago, we covered one Penn alum who had taken off his junior year to pursue a dream. Now I've got a story about another Penn alum who had taken off part of his junior year to also do something very meaningful.

For the spring of his junior year, Jim Goldblum (C'07, 34th Street) joined his brother Josh in New Orleans and followed the seniors of New Orleans' top public high school--the first to open after Katrina-- to learn the stories of community and dislocation. They then created a virtual yearbook from their documentary work, with 150 hours of video interviews, 500 photos, and robust maps and timelines. CNN said, of all the press coverage and all the documentaries, it was "one of the best of the best."

This Penn Doctor is Prepping Celebs for Cannes

Dr. Lisa CassilethLast month Penn's Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to the stars Dr. Lisa (Benke) Cassileth (C'92, M'97) was talking boob jobs with Rachel Ray.

Last night she spoke to Entertainment Tonight about some of the best non-invasive treatments to help people look better. Her segment, in which she commented on celebrities getting ready for the Cannes Film Festival, featured the use of Sclerotherapy: an immediate, quick and painless way to eliminate "spider veins."

Perhaps our DT Correspondent Felisha Liu (W'09) should report on this when she's in Cannes? ...Or maybe not.
UPenn
Dr. Lisa is currently filming a new episode of DR. 90210 today and tomorrow (she's already appeared on DR. 90210 twice!).

This Penn Group Brings in Real World Talent

A few weeks ago, Parisa from last season's The Real World: Sydney came to Penn to sing with the Pennchants.

...If you were a fan of The Real World, you would know that Parisa is a good singer (and unfortunately had to deal with some immature roommates from her season)

So how did the Pennchants score this?

Apparently Parisa is a family friend of the group's President Adam El Sehamy (C'09) and she came down to Penn where the group arranged one of her songs. Pretty cool!

He's Giving Reality Contestants What They Really Want ...No, Not Love

Mark CroninLast week my Penn reality-TV based posts had been centered around Roy Bank (C'94). Now I've got some news from another Penn reality TV big time producer Mark Cronin (Eng'86)...

VH1 recently announced that they are prepping another spinoff to Flavor of Love called I Love Money.

Per Variety, the new show will feature "past contestants from "Flavor of Love," "Rock of Love" and "I Love New York" squaring off against one another in a series of reality show competitions. While "Flavor" and its past offspring were constructed to help celebrities such as Bret Michaels and Flavor Flav find "love," the new show will focus on the pursuit of cash prizes."

It seems Mark's contestants won't be the only ones loving money.

Speaking of Love, have you checked out my Penn "Love Series" here?
