Funny Fridays: New Film From Oscar Nominated Pair
Even after 13 years since graduation two Penn filmmakers are still collaborating and doing some high level Hollywood projects together.
In between picketing during the big Writer's Strike, Rob Pearlstein (C'95, DP) wrote*, directed and acted in a new, very funny short MATUMBO GOLDBERG (Rob is featured far right in movie poster). Along with the film's producer and fellow classmate Loren Mendell (C'95, Class President, Friars) they produced this short which already has Hollywood buzzing about a potential series and feature.
MATUMBO GOLDBERG is about a trendy, none-too-bright couple who adopts an African baby, only to find their new son isn’t quite what they expected. The film stars Anthony Anderson (The Departed, Transformers, Law & Order) and J. Robin Miller (Andy Barker P.I., General Hospital)
Update: Rob and Loren turned their original Matumbo short into a web series for Comedy Central/Atom.com, starring Anthony Anderson and Jenna Elfman. More here
Rob's path to becoming a Hollywood creative force went from starting as a copywriter at an ad agency to becoming a finalist in a HIGHLY reputable contest while Loren's path had him starting at a big Hollywood talent agency and going onto film school. Then in 2006 they came together to work on a short that was nominated OSCAR (featuring Kevin Pollak and LOST's "Hurley")!

Now and Then Thursdays: Penn's Campus Gets Swanky
As you may have heard from the videos of President Gutmann's visit to Los Angeles, the campus will be undergoing a pretty massive expansion shortly.
In my days ('92-'96), there was lots of construction on campus, but my biggest memory had to do with it taking my 4+ undergrad years to redo the exterior of College Hall. (!)
Thanks to Kiera Reilly (C'93, Director, Alumni Education & Travel), we now have exclusive DuelingTampons.com video bringing you some changes happening on campus.
In this installment, Kiera walks down Chestnut Street towards Center City and 34th Street. On the left, note Domus the newly built luxury apartments (there's a pool in here people!). Looks like the campus continues to be getting high end.
3400 Chestnut: Part 1
3400 Chestnut: Part 2
To give you better reference, THIS VIDEO will show you that Kiera is at the intersection of 34th and Chestnut, where you have Domus on the northwest corner, Hill Field on the south east corner and the Law School on the south west corner.
Speaking of a changing campus, have you checked out this shocking video from last year's Convention Center implosion?

Website Wednesdays: Media Maven Musings
In addition to singing well and being the creator of a popular improvised musical troupe, add "blogger" to Jonah Platt's (C'08, Off the Beat Musical Director) list of achievements.
Started in January of 2007, Jonah's site Media Maven Musings offers trustworthy, humorous and Penn-educated (wink) opinions on all things tv/film/music related. The site has had nearly 100,000 unique views since its inception, and has been linked to from dozens of sites around the web, including USAToday, Showtime.com, and many more.

Music Mondays: He's Writing Music for Barbie
In addition to my weekly Tuesday Tips, Wednesday Websites , Now and Then Thursday, and Funny Friday series, it's now time to add another series associated with a day of the week: "Music Mondays". This series will showcase the works of many of our musicians.
I recently reconnected with composer/singer-songwriter extraordinaire Gabriel Mann (C'95) and he's certainly keeping the home fires burning...
Check this out...
- Gabe just finished composing the score for ABC's Carpoolers, and, is in the middle of three video game scores (all his video game scores are done with tag-team composing partner Rebecca Kneubuhl - see kneubuhlmann.com).
- He's co-writing and producing two songs for the next Barbie movie from Mattel (yes, Barbie) with Hannah Montana songwriter Jeannie Lurie and Los Angeles songwriting maven Amy Powers.
- He just performed and produced a cover of "All by Myself" with his new band The Rescues for the upcoming Superhero Movie (l, and is just wrapping up production for Irish songstress Naimee Coleman's new album.
- Gabriel's most recent album Tall Buildings is due for Japanese release on Sandfish Records later this year, and title-track "Shadows of Tall Buildings" was just announced as a finalist in this season's John Lennon Songwriting Contest.
Check out Gabe's "Eight Feet Tall" solo from his CD release party this past summer.
