Funny Fridays: You'll Never Take a Pepsi Challenge The Same Way

In addition to my weekly Tuesday Tips, Wednesday Websites and Now and Then Thursday series, I want to now prove that I can add an descriptive adjective to yet another day of the week with my "Funny Fridays". This series will showcase the works of many of our comics, sketch comedians and improv undergrads and alumni.

Pepsi ChallengeTo start things off, Matt Johnson (C'99, Mask and Wig, Phi Kappa Sigma), directed and stars in a very funny short called "Pepsi Challenge".

Produced with his sketch group The Royal We, this short film is a parody of the Pepsi Challenge, The Manchurian Candidate, and, well, just watch it. You'll never take a Pepsi challenge the same way...

Take Matt Johnson's Pepsi Challenge

Check out a film Matt directed which seriously sucks..in a very good way.

Smells like an Oscar for Penn Producer

Alison GreenspanAlison Greenspan (C'94, Bloomers) is about to work with Hilary Swank on an upcoming film that will sure to tug at your heart.

Alison will be producing the film You're Not You based on the novel by Michelle Wildgen about "a woman dying from Lou Gehrig's disease and a younger woman who takes care of her."

Per today's LA Times article:
"the initial push to adapt Wildgen's book came from Greenspan. Her sister recommended the novel, noting that a key character -- like their dad -- had Lou Gehrig's disease. "I thought this could be a special film, because there aren't that many great parts for women, and this story has two," Greenspan said. 'They give each other valuable gifts before one dies and the other is launched into adulthood.' "

This photo was just released from the set of Elizabeth Banks' (C'96) upcoming film Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

There is an article in yesterday's USA Today which asks the question, "Will potential viewers be turned off because the film has "porno" in the title?"

What do you think? Comment below!

Website Wednesdays: Seeing the Funny in Politics

In light of the currently exciting political environment, for this week's Website Wednesday series, I wanted to feature a new website from one of our alumni that covers politics ...from a satirical level.

George BushPenn alum Rachel Goldberg and her husband just started the satirical news site called The National Protrusion.

Per Rachel, it's "a hilarious online satirical website that takes great pleasure in poking fun at politicians and U.S. politics in general. The site was named Best of the Web by NationalLampoon.com. It has also been written up in popular liberal blogs and is gaining steam even as we speak."

He's a TV Hustler...and a Good One At It

magician
Ryan Oakes (C'00) is using his slick magician skills on a new TV show about cons and scams.

magicianRyan appears on each episode of The Real Hustle taking part in various fun (to watch) scenarios in which he and his colleagues show how easy it is to swindle people out of money. The show puts you "in the know" by helping to educate you on the scams.

Per Ryan, "I work as a professional magician and sleight-of-hand artist in New York City. I travel all over the country performing at corporate events and high-end private affairs. Got involved in the show because they were looking for someone with a skill set similar to those who pull these cons for real on the street... the deceptive techniques used in magic are very similar to the methods used by professional con artists."
