He's Producing A Big Apology Film

He's got an upcoming Jessica Biel film in the works, as well as a film based on a girl who interns for a famous teen starlet.



Now Neil Parris (C’01) will be executive producing "Apologize, Apologize" a comedy drama based on Elizabeth Kelly's book about an "eccentric New England family".



Per the Hollywood Reporter:

"The project centers on Collie, a boy who grows up on Martha's Vineyard surrounded by a set of colorful characters, including an activist mother and a mogul grandfather."

His Movie Is The One To See This Weekend

Bullets that can bend around a corner. Non-stop action. Cool special effects. Clever, creative scenes. Funny dialogue. And of course, Angelina Jolie.These were all of the things that still have me thinking about the Producers Guild screening of Marc Platt's (C'79, Glee Club) Wanted that I saw last night.

I honestly think this film was the greatest movie I think I've seen this year. In a nutshell it's about an underdog who finds out that his lineage is in a fraternity of assassins. Yeah..it's as good as it sounds! Check out the trailer in the widget above.

If you go out and see the film, be sure to notice how Marc Platt's broadway show Wicked is integrated onto the side of a bus, as well as on a marquee.

The Secret (Filmmaker) Lives of Penn Dentists

Do they want to be dentists or do they want to be filmmakers?

Check out this FANTASTIC video put out by some Penn dental students which is packed with action and special effects. It's like Star Wars meets The Matrix, maybe meets The Power Rangers.

Flipping Out: This Penn Alumnus Doesn't Know What He's In For

I was pleasantly surprised to see Chris Keslar (C'99) featured on the Bravo show Flipping Out.



In an effort to transition from the entertainment industry (producer and casting director) to the real estate/interior design industry, Chris is doing an "apprenticeship" as an assistant to Flipping Out star's Jeff Lewis. (Chris had worked on Ugly Betty, but once the writer's strike happened, he took the job with Jeff)



Chris tells me:

"many people who see the show ask, 'is it really real? is jeff really like that? or is it just for show? being a first hand witness to the mad, mad world of jeff lewis i can say most assuredly that the show is very real and not staged. with or without the cameras, he really does take his non-fat, no foam latte, with two splendas at 140 degrees every morning; the labels all do have to face out in the refrigerator; there really does need to be six non-fat, french vanilla coffeemate creamers at all times; any change we give him has to be placed on his desk with all the bills facing the same way - the list goes on and on! it's always, always about the details! having said that, the work he does is really quite amazing and it's pretty fascinating to see him at work!"

From what I was able to see from last week's episode, Chris may not know exactly what he's in for ....however Jeff seems to be the guy to learn the industry.

Last night, did you see Penn alumnus (and Tabard Founder) Melissa Rivers win $50,000 on Celebrity Family Feud for the Guide Dogs for the Blind charity?

As you may know, Melissa and her mother Joan Rivers are often featured as co-hosts for tons of awards shows. You can catch Melissa as a guest on Tom Green's webseries "Tom Green Live."

Transformers 2 Filmed at Penn, Yet Set at Princeton?!! ...More Than Meets The Eye?

I just read from blogger "lopezdash", that there's a rumor spreading across Penn that although the second Transformers movie filmed at Penn, the actual film will be set at Princeton!

Students are um, upset(!) and have created a facebook group protesting this.

...Apparently however it seems from one post in the facebook group that Penn wouldn't give the film the rights to Penn's name. Anyone know anything about this?

Penn Loses a Campus Legend in Bruce "Monty" Montgomery

With sad news, I report the passing of Penn Glee Club's former director Bruce "Monty" Montgomery.

While I had few interactions with Monty during my years at Penn, he always seemed to embody the spirit of Penn.

"Bruce Eglinton Montgomery, one of America's leading authorities on Gilbert & Sullivan, died suddenly at his summer home on the coast of Maine on June 21st, 2008. The Chestnut Hill resident had celebrated his 81st birthday the previous day.

Mr. Montgomery, or "Monty" as he was known to many, hailed from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he directed musical organizations, many of which were dedicated to Gilbert & Sullivan. He was a long-time member of the Orpheus Club, where he was also named an honorary member for his appearances as guest conductor. He was a true renaissance man: painter, poet, composer, lyricist, author, choral arranger and conductor. He also served on the boards of the Theodore H. Presser Foundation and the Edwin B. Garrigues Foundation. A colorful and vibrant man until the very end, he was beloved by the countless performers and audience members whose lives he touched over a long and distinguished career.

Montgomery served as director of the University of Pennsylvania Glee Club for 44 years (1956-2000), writing, directing, choreographing and conducting their shows on many tours around the world. He published a memoir in 2005 entitled Brothers, Sing On!: My Half-Century Around The World With The Penn Glee Club published by University of Pennsylvania Press, relating many of his favorite stories from his tenure as director of the Glee Club, as well as reminiscences about his Gilbert and Sullivan activities. Montgomery served for many years as director and/or music director of Penn's Mask & Wig Club, the University Band, the Penn Players, and many other musical and theatrical groups at Penn before his retirement in 2000. In 1971 he helped to create the Penn Singers, a student light opera and musical theatre company, and continued to serve as their director until his death.

Montgomery was the Artistic Director of the Gilbert & Sullivan Players of Philadelphia - a group founded by his father, tenor James Montgomery - for over three decades after his father died in 1955. Under his guidance, the group produced over 65 productions. He directed and performed leading comedic roles in each of the 14 Gilbert and Sullivan operas. He then served as stage director for the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester County, PA from 1987 until 2007. Montgomery's works have been performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and many other performing groups. The music he wrote for Gilbert and Sullivan's Thespis in the 1950s, for which most of Sullivan's original score was lost, was produced on several occasions, including the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England in 2000.

After his 1963 Irish folk opera, Spindrift, was performed by the Penn Players, he wrote the music and lyrics for a hit 1964 off-Broadway show, The Amorous Flea, receiving rave reviews in the New York papers as "the greatest melodist since Jerome Kern and the greatest lyricist since Larry Hart." The show is still performed in regional theater around the globe.

In 2005 Montgomery received an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Bethany College, in Lindsborg, Kansas. He was also named "Man of the Year" by the Friars Club of Philadelphia in 2006.

After this long and distinguished career Monty was honored by The University of Pennsylvania, where the studio theater at The Annenberg Center was renamed the "Bruce Montgomery Theatre." The newly renovated theater was unveiled at a gala celebration on May 10, 2008, marked by live performances of his original compositions. It was the crowning achievement in the life of an amazing and gifted man and was his last public appearance.

Montgomery was looking forward to directing a "Gilbert & Sullivan Entertainment" this autumn in honor of Charles Spencer, the Ninth Lord Spencer, brother to Princess Diana, at a benefit for Studio Incamminati.

Montgomery is survived by an older brother, James Montgomery, two younger sisters, Constance Cook and Elizabeth Thomas, ten nieces and nephews, ten great nieces and nephews, a great-great nephew and a great-great niece.

Burial will be private and a memorial Celebration of Life is planned for early Autumn in Philadelphia. A date will be announced on Monty's website: http://www.montyart.com/.

TV Writer and Animator Alumni Team Up for Comedy Central Series

And here's another example of alumni who knew each other at Penn and continued working together to create some great projects...

Ryan Levin (C '98, Without a Net, Theater Arts, Penn Players) and Nye Warburton (C '97, Without a Net) have co-created a new animated Comedy Central web series for Benny: Escaped Convict.

This 4-episode web series will air on Comedy Central's Atom TV on June 23 (2 am!), and then launch on June 26 on Comedy Central's new website here.

The series follows Benny's adventures as he tries to elude the fuzz and avoid going back to the slammer.

Per Ryan, "Our goal is to continue Benny as a web series, with the hope of eventually developing it into a TV series. The future of Benny rides on the success of the webisodes, so please, check em out and pass them along."

Be sure to listen for another Penn alum, Vanessa Mizzone (C'99), who voices a variety of characters in the series.
