Allison Winn Scotch's (C'95, Theta, DP Columnist) widely praised novel, The Department of Lost and Found comes out in paperback today.

The book follows the journey of a successful career woman who in coping with lost love and illness finds herself examining what went wrong in her life by tracking down five former loves. Per Allison, the main character learns "that sometimes when life is at its most unexpected, it’s not what you lose that makes you who you are . . . it’s what you find."

A more detailed synopsis here...+/-

"It didn’t start out as the worst day of Natalie Miller’s life. At thirty, she is moving up the political ladder, driven by raw ambition and ruthless determination. As the top aide to New York’s powerful female senator, she works hard, stays late, and enjoys every bit of it, even if the bills she’s pushing through do little to improve the lives of the senator’s constituents. And if her boyfriend isn’t the sexiest guy alive, at least he’s a warm body to come home to.

Then he announces he’s leaving. But that news is barely a blip compared to what Natalie’s doctor tells her: She has breast cancer. And she can’t cure it by merely being headstrong. Now the life Natalie must change is her own.

All her energy, what little of it she has left, must go into saving herself from a merciless disease. So when she’s not lying on the sofa recovering from her treatments and indulging in a curious addiction to The Price Is Right, she realizes it’s time to take a hard look at her choices. She begins by tracking down the five loves-of-her-life to assess what went wrong. Along the way, she questions her relationships with her friends, her parents, her colleagues, the one who got away, and, most important, with herself: Why is she so busy moving through life that she never stops to embrace it?

As Natalie sleuths out the answers to these questions, her journey of self-discovery takes her down new paths and to unexplored places. And she learns that sometimes when life is at its most unexpected, it’s not what you lose that makes you who you are . . . it’s what you find.

If you're a fan of reality TV, you'll be happy to know that there's a Penn alum behind some of the biggest reality shows out there.

For the past 3 years Roy Bank (C'94, Intramural Football) took charge as the head of Development and Operations for Mark Burnett Productions, one of the most recognized television production companies in the world, overseeing such shows as Apprentice, Survivor, RockStar and Contender. Roy is widely known to have been the major force behind the enormous success of Hollywood’s top reality TV company.

If that isn't impressive enough, Roy is also Creator and Executive Producer of Are You Smarter that a 5th Grader? It would seem everything he puts his mind to turns to gold.

I met Roy working on a mutual project with Mark Burnett Productions producing the Yahoo websites for seasons 2-6 of the Apprentice, The Contender and then a game-a-day promotional project for the Flushed Away movie. Roy’s zest for expanding traditional TV and film into new media lit up a new road for leveraging a content down multiple paths.

All eyes are on this guy to see what’s next. DT knows and is about to share with you how your fellow Penn alum broke through the thousands of wanna’-be players and is on a rise to the top of one of most difficult industries – show biz.

Stay tuned this week to find out what HUGE company he's heading up now and what new projects are on the horizon!

I recently discovered a new Penn talent in the world of hip hop. He’s opened up for various world-wide and local icons such as Ludacris, The Pack, Yukmouth, Frontline, and many more.

…And he’s an undergrad.

I’ll be honest, I don’t follow Hip-Hop too much, but when I heard Etan Fraser’s (C’11) music, I became a fan.

This past week, Etan put out a music video with his girlfriend Stephanie McIntyre (C’11) encouraging change through a vote for Obama. This is some good inspirational music if you ask me.

Watch his video here

Per Etan, the heart of his work “shines through the lyrical content of my music, which is richly diverse in content in regards to emotion, subject matter, and lively performance-based songs”.

Etan's start in Hip-Hop and the great opportunities he had at an early age

On a related "political" note,

• there seems to be a big movement recently on campus around Obama. As reported last week, John Legend (C’99) came to campus and performed an original song for Obama’s campaign.

• As for Hillary, there was some movement in early March on campus around the Clinton campaign, and apparently tonight, she's coming to the Palestra!

• And this is the only McCain coverage I've seen on campus
