We've got a great "date" with Ananda

Ananda Sen (C'98 and Pennfest 2007 musician) just launched song #21, "The Date".

As mentioned in my previous post, having begun in June 2007, Ananda has been releasing, free for download, one new song every week for fifty-two weeks!

Per Ananda, "it's cold and rainy in Los Angeles [today], so I thought I'd send you a song that has a bit of a cloudy feel to it".

As you'll listen, this is another great song from Ananda. The soothing tone to Ananda's voice definitely makes all of his songs really enjoyable to listen to.

How "Lovely" for her

It was just announced today that Liz Banks (C'96) will be starring with Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn in an upcoming film entitled "Lovely Still".

Per Hollywood Reporter, the story is "a holiday fable that tells the story of an elderly grocery store bagger [Martin Landau] who discovers love for the first time. [Ellen] Burstyn is the woman he falls for, while Banks plays her daughter."

Exciting times for Liz these days!

Sundance 2008: "a lot of irreverence"

"I think it's fair to say that audiences are exhausted right now with the serious work. That doesn't mean that we don't have serious work in the festival, we do, but some people's take on the depressing world out there is to laugh at it be irreverent. So that's what you're going to see this year at Sundance a lot of irreverence."

Another Quad (plus more) coming to Penn!

Within 5 years, the chances of a freshman getting into the Quad are about to dramatically increase.

That's because there's going to be 2 Quads! ...Plus new parks and new retail and residential areas! And these are just some of Penn's many exciting developments.

For those of you alumni who heard about the eastward campus expansion initiative that was announced a few weeks ago, but didn't quite grasp what was going on, I found a great video hosted by Laura Sciuto (C'09) put out by the Daily Pennsylvanian that will make you wish (again) that you had this whole new campus when you were an undergrad.

"It's the one in Philadelphia..."

Yeah, I bought that "Not Penn State" shirt at Steve and Barry's my freshman year. I've thrown it out years ago, but maybe I should have kept it...

So I was at the gym this morning and someone comes up to me and said, "I noticed you were wearing a Penn shirt at the gym last week. Did you go to Penn State?

Grrr.

As I always do, I gracefully replied, "Actually, it's University of Pennsylvania.. the one in Philadelphia."

And she replies, "Oh, because I have friends who went to Penn State."

Grrr.

Then there's the story from a couple years ago. I was in a Starbucks out here in Los Angeles and there was a guy wearing a Penn sweatshirt. We started chatting for a couple of minutes when a neighboring CHW girl leaned in and asked "Oh, you guys went to Penn State?" The Penn guy with whom I was speaking looked at me and asked "Do you want to take this one or should I?" We both laughed because this wasn't the first, nor would it be the last time we would have to explain the difference...

If I had a nickel...

This musician's gonna "be like that" and I'm loving it

You'd think that after running Pennfest for 6 years, I would have heard of most musicians out there. However with this site and facebook, I keep on discovering great Penn talent out there!

Nikhil Dhingra (C'10) is quite the latest find.

Click here to check out his debut music video for "Be Like That" (directed by talented Penn undergrad Kevin McMullin C'10)

Nikhil has performed at many venues in Downtown Dallas and Philadelphia including Club Dada, The Door, Legacy Shops, World Cafe Live, and his single "Be Like That," has aired on the Texas radio station, The Ticket 1310.

Be on the lookout for this guy. I think he's going places...

Beatboxing with the world's oldest electronic instrument...

Having made music a few months ago with a bike wheel and a walkman, now click here to check out the latest not-so-typical instrument beatboxer Adam Matta (C'96) is using to create music!

Have you ever heard of a theremin? Neither have I.

Per Adam, "A theremin is the world's oldest electronic instrument, invented by Leon Theremin in Russia, 1919. It is played not by touching it, but simply by moving one's hands near the antennae, which create electromagnetic fields that are interrupted by the user's hands."
